Games of Saturday August 10th, 1957

Eddie had the day off, but remains one of the main cogs on the Phillies who is over achieving. He has hit 20 homeruns, thats
3 more then he actually hit, and batting a robust .340....that's
forty three points higher then his actual. Then you have Milwaukee's Red Schoendienst who is hitting forty nine points lower then he really did....still a close race as Cincy continues to feast on Cub pitching and the Cardianls knocked off our Braves....three games is the lead folks

Redlegs......... 2 0 0 2 0 0 6 0 - 10 9 0
Win:Nuxhall(6-5) Loss:Poholsky(3-6)

The Cincinnati Redlegs had an easy time of it at Crosley Field defeating the
Chicago Cubs by a score of 10 to 4.

Cincinnati came up with 6 runs in the 7th inning. Chicago had 15 hits in the
game while Cincinnati had 9, but Cincinnati had the more timely hits.

Joe Nuxhall(6-5) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory. Tom
Poholsky(3-6) suffered the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he
did not allow an earned run in his 2 and 1/3 innings of work.

With this win, Cincinnati has a 66-44 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Bob
Scheffing was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering
along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it
done.'

13 hits for the night.

The win went to Von McDaniel(4-4) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Games of Friday August 9th, 1957

Redlegs hit seven more homeruns, two by Frank Robinson and Smokey Burgess to help sweep Cubs in day-night double header. Brooks beat Buccos as did the Braves over the Cardinals. Phils fall at 9th inning cannonading of Roberts. Old Robin gave up 4 more "Gopher Balls" at the Polo Grounds. That gives him 36 on the year. Crowe notched one (33rd of year) and Ernie Banks hit two in the double dip for the Cubs.

Games of Thursday, August 8th, 1957

Good Day in Milwaukee. Braves beat second place Cincinnati and Philadelphia and Brooklyn get beat as the Braves lead is now four and a half games. Braves got help from the Pirates and the Giants as they knocked off the Phils and the Flock. Ernie Banks joined George Crowe as the only men to hit thirty homeruns so far this season. Banks teed off on hard luck hurler, for the Cardinals, Lloyd Merritt. Merritt is following in the foot steps of many Cardinals who are under achieving on the moound. One guy that might be putting on a salary hike charge is Frank Thomas. He batted .290 in real life and is now starting to climb. He is now at .261, which is the highest it's been sinceMay 5th. On May 5th, Thomas started the day at .281 and went oh for 8 and his average dropped to .271. It was down hill ever since. His average sunk below two hundred for a good part June. He seems to be on the rise

Homeruns- J.Logan(6th), D.Rice-2(7th)

Del Rice cracked 2 homeruns and Lew Burdette pitched a complete game at County
Stadium where the Milwaukee Braves beat the Cincinnati Redlegs 6 to 1.

Rice enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He ripped a base-knock in the 2nd
inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th inning and cracked a solo
homerun (his 7th of the season) in the 8th inning. Milwaukee managed 10 in
their victory.

Burdette(10-8) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Joe
Nuxhall(5-5) was the loser. He surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings.

Vern Law pitched a complete game and Frank Thomas had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the
Pittsburgh Pirates destroyed the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 15 to 2
at Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh jumped on top of Philadelphia in the 2nd inning as they scored 4
runs on 5 base hits. That was all Law(11-5) needed. Pittsburgh bats were
very productive in the 2nd inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits and
the 7th inning when they had 8 runs on 6 hits. Pittsburgh finished with 17
hits in the victory.

Curt Simmons(10-10) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around pretty
good, giving up 7 runs in 4 innings.

Dodgers 3 to 2 at Ebbets Field.

New York brought 2 runs across the plate in the 7th inning when they had 3
base hits. They would prove to be the difference in the contest. Brooklyn
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.

The victory went to Ruben Gomez(6-14) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs.
Marv Grissom recorded his 14th save. Sal Maglie(3-9) was hit with the loss.
He surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Walter Alston said. 'We did
what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'
