Nellie King closed the door on Brooklyn at Ebbets Field where the Pittsburgh
Pirates beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 12 to 9.

Luis Arroyo(1-0) had a fairly solid outing. He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 homeruns. Arroyo got relief help from
King who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 1st save.

Sal Maglie(0-1) was the loser. Pittsburgh scored big getting 8 runs off him
in 2 innings.

It was a great finish at County Stadium as the Milwaukee Braves pulled off a
dramatic comeback beating the Cincinnati Redlegs by the count of 7 to
6.

Milwaukee had the winning rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs using 4 hits.
After an out was recorded, Johnny Logan started the rally when he stroked a
one-base hit. One out later, Del Crandall came up and he slapped a single.
Don Gross then had one get away for a wild pitch. Frank Torre was up next
and he stroked a base-hit scoring two baserunners. Danny O'Connell stepped
into the box and tripled giving Milwaukee the victory as 25,081 happy fans
celebrated wildly. Milwaukee had 12 hits for the afternoon.

Taylor Phillips(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
Gross(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter
allowing 2 hits and no walks.

'We just wouldn't give up,' O'Connell said. 'Much of the credit goes to our
fans - they were with us the whole way.'

Curt Simmons delivered 9 solid innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the New York Giants by the score of 8 to 2 at Polo Grounds.

Simmons(1-0) had a strong outing. He allowed only 5 hits and no walks in 9
innings. Philadelphia had a total of 12 hits for the game.

The loss was charged to Ruben Gomez(0-1). He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 3
and 1/3 innings. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I
think I'm hitting a good groove.' Simmons said after the game. 'I'm ready to
start another game tomorrow!'

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs by a score of 8 to 5 at
Sportsman's Park.

Stan Musial provided much of the offense. He doubled bringing in two
baserunners in the 6th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of the
season) in the 8th inning. St. Louis totaled 11 on the night.

The winning pitcher was Willard Schmidt(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 3 innings.
Hoyt Wilhelm earned the save, his 1st. Moe Drabowsky(0-1) was the losing
pitcher. He was knocked around by St. Louis, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in
6 innings.
