Lew Burdette was off to a slow start. He had an 0 and 1 record with an era above seven. He needed a great outing and the Milwaukee Braves got one from the big, rangey, righthander. He mowed down the Pirates on four hits and only walked 1 batter to improve his record to 1 and 1 and the Braves first place mark to 9 and 4. The Braves are just a half game in front of the red-hot Cincinnati Redlegs. The Buccos, who started off with a great April, 8 and 4 are now 8 and six on the season.
