Warren Spahn carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning and left fielder Bobby
Thomson had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves beat the Chicago
Cubs by a score of 5 to 4.

Spahn(1-0) gave a fine effort for Milwaukee. He went 9 innings surrendering 6
hits and 3 walks. The left-handed Spahn had his no-hit bid broken up by Gene
Baker who singled with two outs in the 7th inning. Chicago had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.

Dick Drott(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. Despite losing Bob
Scheffing was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this one.
Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen
little things go different, and we come out on top.'

Don Gross(1-0) shut down the St. Louis Cardinals hitters at Crosley Field in
12 innings. The Cincinnati Redlegs came away with a 1 to 0 victory.

Neither team managed to score in the first nine innings. Cincinnati ended up
winning it in the 12th inning. After two outs Roy McMillan providing the
offense himself as he belted a solo home run (his 1st of the season)
resulting in a mighty exciting win for Cincinnati and the 8,660 home town
fans in attendance. Both teams totaled 6 on the afternoon.

Bob Smith(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 2/3
of an inning.

Bob Friend tossed a complete game at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the New York Giants 6 to 3.

In the 4th inning Pittsburgh scored 5 runs with the help of 6 hits. It was
enough to earn the victory. Pittsburgh had a total of 11 hits for the game.

Friend(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. Johnny Antonelli(0-1)
was the loser. He allowed 6 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings.

Robin Roberts went 13 strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored
the Brooklyn Dodgers in 15 innings 4 to 3.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Philadelphia won it in the 15th inning.
Ed Bouchee reached on an error. Rip Repulski next to the plate and he was
walked intentionally. Willie Jones then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Marv
Blaylock came up and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Bob
Bowman got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Ted Kazanski
continued the rally and lined a one-base hit giving Philadelphia the victory
as 9,721 happy fans celebrated wildly. Overall Philadelphia out-hit Brooklyn
18 to 9.

The win went to Bob Miller(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. The loss was
charged to Ed Roebuck(0-1) in relief. He couldn't find the strike zone and
allowed 5 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
