Gil Hodges had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Ebbets Field where the Brooklyn
Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 2.

Brooklyn scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they had 3 base
hits. The key at-bat was by Carl Furillo who brought the crowd to their feet
when he stroked a single plating two runs. Overall Brooklyn out-hit St.
Louis 10 to 7.

Roger Craig(1-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Lindy
McDaniel(0-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 7 hits in 6
and 2/3 innings.

The Brooklyn ballclub's record now stands at 8-7. With this loss, St. Louis

Warren Hacker went the distance and Frank Robinson had 4 hits at The Polo
Grounds where the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the New York Giants by the score of
6 to 2.

Hacker(1-0) had a strong outing. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 1
walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 6.23 to 4.08. Cincinnati managed 13
in their victory.

Johnny Antonelli(1-2) was the losing pitcher. Cincinnati continued their
winnings ways improving their record to 11-5. They are 8-2 in their last ten
games. With this loss, New York has a 6-4 record of late, 6-11 overall.

Jack Sanford racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts at Connie Mack
Stadium as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 7 to 4.

Chico Fernandez enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He tripled emptying the
bases in the 6th inning and doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 8th
inning. Philadelphia had 8 hits for the afternoon.

Sanford(2-1), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss
was charged to Jackie Collum(1-2) in relief.

Mayo Smith was asked about the performance of Sanford, 'He had his good stuff
out there this afternoon. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts
start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

Frank Thomas hit one over the fence at Forbes Field as the Milwaukee Braves
lost a heartbreaker to Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 5 to 4.

Pittsburgh scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Gene Baker delivered a
base-hit. Dick Groat stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a single.
Roberto Clemente then lashed a single giving Pittsburgh the victory and
sending the 25,918 home-town fans home happy. Pittsburgh had 12 hits for the
game and Milwaukee had 9.

The win went to Nellie King(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Red
Murff(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter
giving up 3 hits and no walks.
