16,553 fans were treated to a fine game at Wrigley Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Chicago Cubs won by the slimmest
of margins, 6 to 5.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Chicago came out the
victor in the 10th inning. Walt Moryn doubled. Ernie Banks stepped up next
and he was walked intentionally. Bob Speake then drew a walk to load the
bases. Bobby Del Greco stepped in and he drew a walk resulting in a mighty
exciting win for Chicago and the 16,553 home town fans in attendance.
Chicago banged out 9 on the afternoon.

Jackie Collum(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. The losing
pitcher was Willard Schmidt(1-1) in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 1 hit
in 1 inning.

The Chicago Cubs edged the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field by the score
of 6 to 5.

Chicago set the tone of the game in the first inning when they tallied 3 runs
on 5 hits. Chicago totaled 13 on the afternoon.

The winning pitcher was Jim Brosnan(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Tom
Cheney(0-1) was given the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 1/3
innings.

One run was the difference at Crosley Field as the Milwaukee Braves defeated
the Cincinnati Redlegs 4 to 3.

The game was decided in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Johnny
Logan tripled. Bill Bruton followed and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the
run. Milwaukee had 8 hits for the game and Cincinnati had 4.

The victory went to Gene Conley(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Ernie Johnson earned his 1st save. Brooks Lawrence(1-2) suffered the
loss in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Bob Friend blanked Brooklyn in a very well-pitched complete game at Forbes
Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 2
to 0.

Friend(2-2) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Brooklyn offense. He
didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA
from 5.14 to 3.60. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

Roger Craig(0-1) was charged with the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in
7 innings.

The New York Giants cruised to a 9 to 4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies
at Connie Mack Stadium.

Philadelphia was unable to recover after New York went ahead in the 4th inning
scoring 3 runners on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Daryl
Spencer who silenced the crowd when he doubled plating all three baserunners.
New York managed 11 in their victory.

Al Worthington(1-0) went 5 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Jack
Sanford(1-1) took the loss. He pitched 5 innings giving up 5 hits and 4
walks.

runs on 1 hit. The crucial at-bat was provided by Joe Lonnett who made the
crowd happy when he hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates (his
1st of the season). Philadelphia had only 6 hits for the afternoon.

Jack Meyer(2-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Steve Ridzik(0-1)
was the loser in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 4 runs in 2
innings.
