15,682 fans were treated to a fine game at The Polo Grounds as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The New York Giants registered 4
runs in the 3rd inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

Gail Harris provided much of the offense. He slapped a base-hit in the 2nd
inning, banged out a single which was good for two runs in the 3rd inning and
bombed a two-run dinger (his 4th of the season) in the 7th inning. Chicago
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Al Worthington(2-0) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Marv Grissom got the save, his 1st. Dick Drott(0-4) ended up with the loss
in relief.

Bill Rigney was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

the inning off right when he lined a single. Jim Bolger got his turn next,
but he was a strikeout victim. Ed Winceniak then laced a base-hit. Dale

Gordon Jones(0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an
inning allowing 2 hits and no walks. Bob Scheffing was just happy to get a
win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the
monkey off our back. Now maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of
baseball of which we are capable.'
