Giants by a score of 8 to 4 at The Polo Grounds.

Hoak had a great day at the plate. He ripping a solo home run in the 3rd
inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 4th inning and smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 4th of the season) in the 9th inning. Johnny
Klippstein(2-1) was helped out by Don Gross who pitched a perfect ninth and
recorded his 2nd save.

Steve Ridzik(0-2) was the loser in relief. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 1
and 2/3 innings. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around'
Hoak said. 'We played well together as a team.'

One run was the difference at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated
the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 7.

In the 3rd inning Brooklyn scored 6 runs with the help of 5 hits. The
highlight belonged to Jim Gilliam who brought the crowd to their feet when he
doubled bringing in two baserunners. St. Louis made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The win was credited to Johnny Podres(2-1) who went 6 innings allowing 6 runs.
Podres got help from Clem Labine who was credited with his 2nd save. Herm
Wehmeier(1-2) was hit with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 5 hits and 4 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Walter Alston said after the game. 'Podres did not have command
of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'

Willie Jones opened up the rally as he smacked a single. Stan Lopata stepped
into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Bob Bowman then drew a walk to
load the bases. Fernandez stepped in and he tripled clearing the bases.

runs on 5 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Joe Adcock who
silenced the stadium when he doubled clearing all three ducks off the pond.
Milwaukee finished with 13 hits in the victory.

Burdette(1-1) was credited with the shutout. Ron Kline(1-3) ended up with the
