Eight games dotted the schedule for this Memorial Day 1957. I can kind of remember when Memorial Day wasn't always celebrated on a Monday. I can't remember if it was always on the 30th or 31st of May. Oh, well these doubleheaders were on a Thursday, so kids were out of school and life was good. Especially for Edgar Bailey, Wally Moon and Ray Crone. Bailey and Moon hit two homeruns apiece in their games against each other. Moon's shots were heard in the first game in a losing cause against the Redlegs 5-4 and Bailey's two solo blast were against the lefty slants of Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell in a losing cause in game two 3-2. Moon now has hit ten homeruns for the Cardinals and Bailey is up to 9 blasts for the Redlegs. Ray Crone had a 3 hit shutout as the Milwaukee Braves took the first game from the Cubs 3-0. Two other shutsouts were dealt on this day as Gomez 3 hit the Phils and won 2-nil and Don Cardwell turned the trick in game two shuting out the Giants 2-0 on five hits. All the other games were one run affairs. With the doubleheader sweep and the Redlegs split, Milwaukee took over first place by one half game over Cincinnati.
