Rube Walker had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers outscored the
Cincinnati Redlegs 5 to 4.

Brooklyn scored 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. They would
prove to be the difference in the contest. Cincinnati had a chance in the
9th but they came up short.

Roger Craig(3-2) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Clem Labine
recorded his 9th save. Tom Acker(2-3) was the loser in relief.

'He gutted it out' Walter Alston said of Craig. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

Whitey Lockman ripped 2 homeruns at the Polo Grounds as the New York Giants
beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11 to 5.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Lockman. He lined a single in the 1st inning, ripping a solo
home run in the 5th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 5th of the
season) in the 7th inning. New York had 16 hits overall, while St. Louis had
7.

The victory was credited to Curt Barclay(3-3) who went 6 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 3 runs. Johnny Antonelli earned the save, his 1st. Larry
Jackson(2-4) was given the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 6 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies edged the Chicago Cubs in 11 innings at Connie Mack
Stadium by the score of 2 to 1.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Philadelphia came out
on top in the 11th inning. Ed Bouchee hit a bases-empty home run (his 10th
of the season) making Philadelphia the winners and sending the 31,284 fans
home happy. Both teams totaled 6 on the night.

Seth Morehead(2-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Jim
Brosnan(1-2) took the loss in relief. With this win, Philadelphia has a
29-19 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Not able to get much going in
recent weeks, Chicago is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 12-30,
worst in the league.

Gene Freese had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the Milwaukee Braves 5 to 4.

Bob Purkey(5-3) delivered a fine performance for Pittsburgh. He surrendered 5
hits and 1 walk in 6 innings improving his ERA from 3.53 to 3.28. Milwaukee
threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.

Luis Arroyo recorded his 2nd save. Warren Spahn(6-5) ended up with the loss.
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Fred Haney
said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
