Hersh Freeman went 3 strong innings and Gus Bell had 2 base hits at Crosley
Field as the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the ice-cold Chicago Cubs 7 to 5.

Art Fowler(6-0) was brilliant in relief and registered the victory. He did
not allow a baserunner in his 1 inning. Freeman earned the save with a
perfect ninth, his 7th save.

Jackie Collum(1-3) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up no hits and 1 walk
without retiring a batter.

Left fielder Bob Speake had 2 base hits and Don Elston delivered 3 solid
innings as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Redlegs 4 to 3 at Crosley
Field.

Bob Rush(2-2) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 4 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings. Chicago had 8 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 4.

Elston recorded the save, his 1st. Johnny Klippstein(2-4) was the loser. His
ERA increased from 3.54 to 3.83 as he allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.

'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Rush said. 'It's great to be back on the
winning side of things.'

ST. LOUIS AT MILWAUKEE

Stan Musial hit 2 doubles and scored 3 times and Larry Jackson pitched a
complete game as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Milwaukee Braves 5 to
2.

In the top of the 4th inning St. Louis went on top for good with 2 runs using
4 hits. Musial started the inning off right when he doubled. Wally Moon was
next and he stroked a base-hit knocking in a run. Joe Cunningham then
slapped a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Bobby Gene Smith came to
the plate and banged out a single scoring the final run of the inning. St.
Louis totaled 17 on the afternoon.

Jackson(2-3) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Bob Buhl(4-2)
was the loser. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 15-25. With
this loss, Milwaukee has a 7-3 record of late, 28-14 overall.

Jim Gilliam had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Don Newcombe went 9 strong innings
as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 2 at Connie
Mack Stadium.

Brooklyn wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring one
runner utilizing 2 base hits. Brooklyn had 8 hits for the afternoon.

Newcombe(4-3) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Bob
Miller(1-2) ended up with the loss. He pitched 4 innings and surrendered 4
hits and 1 walk.

First baseman Dee Fondy had 2 base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the
New York Giants by a score of 3 to 2 at Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. Gene Freese singled.
Freese was safe on a stolen base. Bill Mazeroski then laid down a sacrifice
bunt. Fondy came up and he delivered a single scoring the run. New York had
a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Luis Arroyo(3-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Roy Face got the
save, his 5th. Al Worthington(2-3) absorbed the loss in relief.

Left fielder Frank Thomas had 2 base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
New York Giants by a score of 2 to 0.

Pittsburgh jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring one
runner using 3 hits. Gene Freese lined a single. Bill Mazeroski came to the
plate and stroked a single. Dee Fondy was next to the plate, but was
promptly struck out. Roberto Clemente was up next and he ripped a base-knock
scoring the run. That was all the offense they were to need. Pittsburgh
finished with 9 hits while New York ended up with 4.

Bob Purkey(4-3) got the win allowing no runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Purkey was
helped out by Roy Face who recorded his 6th save. Pete Burnside(0-4) took
the loss.
