Harry Anderson connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI and Robin Roberts took
a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Sportsman's Park as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 1.

Roberts(3-2) gave Philadelphia a solid outing. He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.21
to 2.91. The right-handed Roberts lost his chance for a no-hitter when Hobie
Landrith singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Philadelphia finished
with 11 hits in the victory.

Sam Jones(1-4) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings. With this win, Philadelphia has a 18-10 record. They have been 6-4
lately. With this loss, St. Louis has a 4-6 record of late, 10-16 overall.

Don Hoak went yard and had 4 RBI as the Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the
ice-cold New York Giants by the score of 8 to 5 at Crosley Field.

Hoak made sure the Cincinnati fans enjoyed themselves. He doubled bringing in
two baserunners in the 1st inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 7th of the
season) in the 6th inning. Despite losing, New York out-hit Cincinnati 15 to
8.

The win was credited to Art Fowler(4-0) who went 3 innings allowing 1 run.
Hersh Freeman earned the save, his 3rd. Ruben Gomez(2-4) was charged with
the loss. He gave up 8 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings of work.

Vern Law shut down the Milwaukee batters on just 3 hits as the Pittsburgh
Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Braves 1 to 0 at County Stadium.

Law(2-1) was simply too much for the Milwaukee batters. He gave up just 3
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.70. Pittsburgh had 7 hits
for the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Warren Spahn(4-3). He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 8
innings.

Willard Schmidt(3-1) got the win with a steady relief outing. He was reached

9th but St. Louis was able to put down the rally.

Hoyt Wilhelm recorded his 3rd save. Curt Simmons(3-2) absorbed the loss. He
surrendered 9 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.

Third baseman Frank Thomas lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as
the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Redlegs 7 to 3 at Crosley
Field.

Cincinnati never recovered after Pittsburgh took the lead in the 7th inning as
they scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. The big moment was provided by Thomas who
helped quiet the crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 4th of the
season). For the game Pittsburgh out-hit Cincinnati 13 to 9.

Bob Purkey(2-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 1 run. Purkey got help from Bob Smith who was credited with his 2nd
save. Brooks Lawrence(3-4) was the losing pitcher. He allowed a few too
many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at 13-15. Cincinnati has a record
of 18-11 after the loss.

Catcher Smoky Burgess smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Cincinnati

Burgess had a good day at the plate. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the
2nd inning, bombed a two-run dinger (his 2nd of the season) in the 5th inning

Bob Buhl tossed a fine 3 hitter as the Milwaukee Braves topped the slumping
New York Giants by a score of 3 to 1 at County Stadium.

Milwaukee tallied 2 runs in the 4th inning. The highlight belonged to Eddie
Mathews who brought a roar from the partisan County Stadium fans when he
blasted a two-run home run (his 8th of the season). Milwaukee finished with
8 hits in the victory.

The win went to Buhl(3-0) who allowed 1 run in the game. Al Worthington(2-1)
absorbed the loss. He allowed just 2 runs and 2 hits in 5 innings.

Gilliam keyed the rally when he banged out a single. One out later, Duke
Snider came up and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 5th of
the season). Brooklyn had 7 hits for the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Newcombe(3-2) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Larry Jackson(0-2) was charged with the loss.

The winning ways continue for Brooklyn. They now have a record of 8-2 in
recent days. With the loss, the St. Louis ballclub's record is 11-17.
