Dale Long had 4 hits and Dick Drott tossed a complete game shutout at Wrigley
Field as the Chicago Cubs won in their last at-bat beating the Milwaukee
Braves by the count of 1 to 0.

Chicago won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After two
outs Ernie Banks drew a walk. Bob Speake stepped up next and he stroked a
base-hit. Long then banged out a single giving Chicago the victory and
sending the 16,401 home-town fans home happy. Chicago finished with 9 hits
in the victory.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Drott(3-5). Taylor Phillips(1-1)
absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 2 and 2/3
innings.

14,642 fans were treated to a fine game at Wrigley Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Milwaukee Braves won by the
slimmest of margins, 9 to 8.

Hank Aaron provided the offensive punch. He bombed a two-run dinger (his 9th
of the season) in the 5th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the
6th inning. Chicago threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Juan Pizarro(3-0) was the winner allowing 6 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Warren
Spahn earned his 1st save. Elmer Singleton(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He
allowed Milwaukee 8 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings of work.

Bob Scheffing was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'

Gil Hodges went yard and had 4 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers topped the New York
Giants by a score of 5 to 3 at Ebbets Field.

Hodges helped send the fans home happy. He tripled plating three runs in the
1st inning and cracked a solo homerun (his 6th of the season) in the 5th
inning. New York had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Sandy Koufax(4-1) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Koufax got help
from Clem Labine who was credited with his 4th save. The losing pitcher was
Ruben Gomez(2-5).

Bill Rigney was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

ST. LOUIS AT CINCINNATI

George Crowe had 2 base hits and Hal Jeffcoat was able to finish what he
started and was credited with a complete game at Crosley Field as the
Cincinnati Redlegs beat the slumping St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 9 to
3.

Jeffcoat(5-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Cincinnati. He
allowed 10 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Cincinnati had a total of 9 hits
for the game.

Murry Dickson(0-3) was the loser. He gave up 5 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.

PITTSBURGH AT PHILADELPHIA

Vern Law was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game at Connie Mack Stadium where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 3.

Pittsburgh came up with 3 runs in the 2nd inning when they had 4 base hits.
After an out was recorded, Roman Mejias was the sparkplug when he stroked a
one-base hit. Dee Fondy got his chance to keep things going, but he went
down on strikes. Gene Baker then lined a base-hit. Hank Foiles was up next
and he drew a walk to load the bases. Law came to the plate and laced a
one-base hit scoring two teammates. Roberto Clemente kept the inning going
and delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. Pittsburgh
finished with 11 hits in the victory.

The winning pitcher was Law(3-1) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Curt
Simmons(3-3) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 1 and
2/3 innings.

In a two run game the Pittsburgh Pirates got by the Philadelphia Phillies by
the score of 7 to 5.

Bob Purkey(3-2) got the win with a steady relief outing. He surrendered 4
hits and no walks in 2 innings. Despite losing, Philadelphia out-hit
Pittsburgh 16 to 6.

Roy Face got the save, his 3rd. The loss was charged to Don Cardwell(2-2).
He pitched 8 innings giving up 4 hits and 3 walks.
