Ray Crone blanked Chicago allowing just 3 hits at County Stadium where the
Milwaukee Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 3 to 0.

Crone(3-1) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Chicago batters. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings improving
his ERA from 2.52 to 1.85. Milwaukee finished with just 4 hits in the
victory.

Dick Drott(3-6) took the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 4 hits in 7 innings.

The Milwaukee Braves nipped the slumping Chicago Cubs 5 to 4 at County Stadium
in a hard fought contest.

Taylor Phillips(2-1) had a fairly solid outing. He went 5 and 2/3 innings
surrendering 4 hits and 6 walks. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.

Dave Jolly recorded his 1st save. Tom Poholsky(0-2) suffered the loss. He
was not very effective, surrendering 4 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Ruben Gomez allowed 3 hits while blanking Philadelphia at the Polo Grounds
where the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2 to 0.

Gomez(3-5) was virtually untouchable. He allowed just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9
innings lowering his ERA to 4.94. New York had just 6 hits for the
afternoon.

Curt Simmons(3-4) was the loser. He gave up 2 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.
'All of my pitches were working today,' Gomez said. 'I felt really good out
there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.'

Don Cardwell pitched a complete game shutout as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the New York Giants 2 to 0 at the Polo Grounds.

Cardwell(3-2) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 5
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.53 to 2.92. The New
York offense proved no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Curt Barclay(2-3) absorbed the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 6
hits and no walks.

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Brooklyn Dodgers at Forbes Field by the score
of 3 to 2.

Pittsburgh wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they
scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Dee Fondy who made the
home-town crowd a happy bunch when he lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run (his 4th of the season). Brooklyn threatened in the 9th but
Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.

The win went to Vern Law(4-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Law got help
from Roy Face who was credited with his 4th save. Sal Maglie(2-3) was tagged
with the loss.

Center fielder Duke Snider hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 2 at Forbes
Field.

Brooklyn started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first when they scored 2 runs on 5 hits. The highlight belonged to
Snider who silenced the crowd when he cracked a two-run shot (his 11th of the
season). Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The winning pitcher was Sandy Koufax(5-1) who allowed 2 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Clem Labine recorded his 6th save. Bob Purkey(3-3) was the losing
pitcher. He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings.

The Cincinnati Redlegs nipped the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 4 at Sportsman's
Park in a hard fought contest.

Cincinnati brought 2 runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning when
they had 3 base hits. They would be enough to earn the win. St. Louis had a
chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Hersh Freeman(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Art
Fowler was credited with his 1st save. Herm Wehmeier(2-4) was tagged with
the loss in relief. He allowed Cincinnati 3 runs in 2 innings of work.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Fred Hutchinson said. 'It's
bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating
yourselves, that's really bad.'

Eddie Kasko went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Cincinnati
Redlegs in 11 innings 3 to 2.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. St. Louis was
victorious in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Kasko blasted a
solo shot (his 2nd of the season) giving St. Louis the win and sending the
home town fans into a frenzy. St. Louis finished with 10 hits in the
victory.

Herm Wehmeier(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Tom Acker(2-2) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 1 hit and no
walks in 1/3 of an inning.
