The Chicago Cubs nipped the Cincinnati Redlegs 3 to 2 at Wrigley Field in a
hard fought contest.

Dave Hillman(1-0) earned the victory with a fine relief performance. No one
was able to reach base in his 1/3 of an inning. Cincinnati had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.

Hillman got help from Turk Lown who earned his 2nd save. Hal Jeffcoat(3-1)
was given the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Chicago now has a record of 6-16. With the loss, Cincinnati has a record of
7-3 lately, 14-8 overall.

Shortstop Ernie Banks had 2 base hits as the Chicago Cubs topped the
Cincinnati Redlegs by a score of 4 to 3 at Wrigley Field.

Cincinnati was unable to recover after Chicago went ahead in the bottom of the
7th inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Chicago finished with 8
hits in the victory.

The winning pitcher was Moe Drabowsky(1-3) who allowed no runs in 4 innings.
The losing pitcher was Don Gross(2-2). He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 8
innings.

Johnny Podres hurled a 3 hitter at the Polo Grounds where the Brooklyn Dodgers
beat the New York Giants by the score of 5 to 1.

Brooklyn jumped on top of New York in the 2nd inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 1 hit. That early scoring was all that Podres(3-2) needed. Brooklyn had
only 6 hits for the afternoon.

The loss was charged to Pete Burnside(0-3). He gave up 5 runs in 3 and 2/3
innings of work.

In a game for the baseball purist, Curt Simmons(3-1) and Luis Arroyo(2-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Philadelphia Phillies finally emerged
victorious over Pittsburgh Pirates, 3 to 1.

Philadelphia took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one
runner utilizing 3 base hits. Philadelphia had 11 hits for the afternoon
while Pittsburgh had 7.

Simmons got help from Bob Miller who was credited with his 1st save. This win
by Philadelphia continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games,
they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 15-8. Bobby Bragan was
unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he
said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

Ed Bouchee had 3 base hits at Forbes Field where the Philadelphia Phillies
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 12 innings 6 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Finally, Philadelphia pulled
the game out in the 12th inning. Harry Anderson started the inning off right
when he tripled. Bouchee stepped up next and he hit a deep fly plating a
run. Willie Jones then hit a bases-empty home run (his 3rd of the season).
For the game Philadelphia out-hit Pittsburgh 14 to 11.

Jack Meyer(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no
runs. Red Swanson(0-1) was the loser in relief.

This win by Philadelphia continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 16-8. Pittsburgh
can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8
record over the last couple weeks.

MILWAUKEE AT ST. LOUIS

The Milwaukee Braves tallied 4 runs in the 1st inning and edged the St. Louis
Cardinals at Sportsman's Park by the score of 5 to 4.

Lew Burdette(2-2) had a steady outing. He went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 11
hits and 5 walks. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but Milwaukee was able to
put down the rally.

Taylor Phillips was credited with his 2nd save. Murry Dickson(0-2) was the
losing pitcher. 'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Fred
Hutchinson said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What
can you say?'

Del Crandall blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves defeated
the St. Louis Cardinals in 11 innings by a score of 17 to 12 at Sportsman's
Park.

Both teams were tied at 12 runs apiece after nine innings. Milwaukee won the
game in the 11th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Warren Spahn
who helped quiet the crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners.
Milwaukee bats were very productive in the 11th inning when they had 5 runs
on 4 hits. St. Louis was out-hit by Milwaukee, 18 hits to 15.

The win was credited to Gene Conley(4-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Lloyd Merritt(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. Milwaukee continued on their
recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 6 games and counting.
