Whitey Lockman, Dusty Rhodes, and Hank Sauer are three reasons that the New York Giants are off to such a terrible start. By all means, total blame can't go on their shoulders but take a look at their numbers and they are big contributing factors. Lockman has 3 homeruns and only 9 rbi with a .189 batting average and a .246 on base average. Whitey actaully hit .248 in 1957 and had a .308 on base percentage. For Hank Sauer, he is hitting .203 (actually he hit .259) and has only 5 homeruns and ten rbi. His on base percentage in 1957 was .343, but so far this year Hank is at .299. Dusty Rhodes is hitting .163 with only one homerun and 11 rbi and both Rhodes and Sauer have contributed to the "clean-up" spot in the Giants line-up supporting a .200 average with only 7 homeruns and 20 rbi. The Giants are dead last in batting with a team average of .225 when in actual they hit .252. Their team ERA for 1957 was an actual 4.01 while this replay they are giving earned runs up at a 4.49 rate. No wonder they are battling the Chicago Cubs for cellar dwellers in this the first week in June, 1957. The Giants are 6 and 17 at the Polo Grounds and are hitting .208 with only 22 homeruns. Their opponents are hitting .268 and have hit 35 homeruns. Now I know why Walter O'Malley had an easy time to talk Stoneman into the move to the West Coast.Posted by Picasa
