Bill Mazeroski hit for the cycle tonight as the Pittsburgh Pirates lambasted the Cincinnati Redlegs 16-0. The Bucs got 27 hits and two others on the Buccos made five hits for the night's work. Frank Thomas, who had just 6 hits for the month of June, exploded for five as did Dee Fondy. Roberto Clemente could have been the fourth member to get five, but he failed in his last at bat. Twenty seven hits is and probably will remain the top performance of the season. In other games, the Chicago Cubs hit 5 homeruns led by Cal Neeman who hit two boundry belts. Other Bruins hitting for the distance were Walt Moryn, Ernie Banks and Jim Bogler. The Cubs beat up the Polo Grounders 12-4. In other games the Brooklyn Dodgers out slugged the Milwaukee Braves 9-6 and the St. Louis Cardinals bested the Philadelphia Phillies on a Ken Boyer two-run homerun off of Sanford in the top of the 8th to beat the Quakers 4-3. Sorry that no boxscores were saved for this date....Thursday, June 13th, 1957. In the American League on this date in a real occurance, Ted Williams becomes the first player of the season to hit 3 homeruns in a game and he does it for the second time against Cleveland's Early Wynn and Bob Lemon. In a game between the Yankees and the White Sox a donny brook broke out when Art Ditmar buzzed Lary Doby's head and the ball got past Elston Howard. When Ditmar covered home plate, Doby threatened Ditmar. "I'll stick a knife in your back if you ever do that again", Doby said. He then takes a swing at Ditmar and all hell breaks loose. Both benchs empty as Bill Skowron takes on Doby Walt Dropo does battle with Enos "Country" Slaughter and tears the shirt off his back. Finally after order is restored, some thirty minutes long, Billy Martin hears about the remark from Ditmar and then attacks Doby. Finally after order is restored and cooler heads prevail, the Yankees beat the White Sox 4-3.
