The Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 5 to 2 at
Ebbets Field.

Gus Bell had a big day at the plate. He doubled resulting in a run in the 1st
inning, blasted a solo shot (his 5th of the season) in the 5th inning and
doubled bringing in a run in the 7th inning. For the game Cincinnati out-hit
Brooklyn 11 to 8.

Brooks Lawrence(4-5) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Lawrence got help from Tom Acker who was credited with his 3rd save. Don
Drysdale(6-1) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 9 hits in 7
innings.

George Crowe ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Hal Jeffcoat was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the
Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 9 to 2 at
Ebbets Field.

Crowe enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 4th inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his 17th
of the season) in the 8th inning. Despite losing, Brooklyn out-hit
Cincinnati 10 to 6.

The win went to Jeffcoat(8-1) who allowed 2 runs in the game. The losing
pitcher was Ed Roebuck(2-2). He allowed 6 runs and 3 hits in 1 and 1/3
innings.

With this win, Cincinnati has a 31-19 record. They have been 5-5 lately.
Brooklyn has a record of 28-19 after the loss.

ST. LOUIS AT NEW YORK

The St. Louis Cardinals edged the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds by the
score of 5 to 4.

Vinegar Bend Mizell(2-0) delivered a fine performance for St. Louis. He went
7 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 walks. New York was out-hit by St. Louis, 10
hits to 7.

Mizell was helped out by Lloyd Merritt who recorded his 1st save. The loss
was charged to Stu Miller(1-4). He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings giving up 8
hits and 3 walks.

Center fielder Willie Mays collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the
New York Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 6 to 3 at
the Polo Grounds.

Johnny Antonelli(4-3) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He
didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. New York had 13
hits for the game and St. Louis had 9.

Antonelli got help from Marv Grissom who earned his 6th save. Lindy
McDaniel(3-5) was the losing pitcher. He was hit hard and gave up 12 hits
and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

29,964 fans watched an exciting game at Connie Mack Stadium. The Philadelphia
Phillies topped the Chicago Cubs by the slimmest of margins, 3 to
2.

Philadelphia jumped out to the early lead in the first inning plating an
isolated run. Richie Ashburn drew a walk. Two outs later Ed Bouchee came up
and he drew a walk. Willie Jones then delivered a one-base hit scoring the
run. Chicago threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the
rally.

Don Cardwell(5-2) allowed 2 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Turk Farrell recorded his 4th save. Dick Drott(3-7) absorbed the
loss.

The Philadelphia ballclub's record now stands at 30-19. Chicago can't seem to
snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over
the last couple weeks.

Left fielder Harry Anderson hit a homerun and had 2 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium
where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 6 to 4.

Harvey Haddix(6-1) had a steady outing. He surrendered 8 hits and 1 walk in 6
and 1/3 innings. Haddix chalked up 7 strikeouts and gave up 2 homeruns.
Philadelphia finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Turk Farrell earned his 5th save. Moe Drabowsky(1-7) was charged with the
loss. He was touched for 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Haddix, 'I got burned on
a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

Hank Aaron connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI at Forbes Field where the
Milwaukee Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 4.

Milwaukee took the lead for keeps in the 7th inning plating an isolated run
utilizing 2 base hits. Milwaukee totaled 11 on the afternoon.

Bob Trowbridge(1-0) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Ernie
Johnson was credited with his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Bob
Friend(3-7). He gave up 5 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings.

Juan Pizarro dominated striking out 12 Pittsburgh batters as the Milwaukee
Braves defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 8 to 0 at Forbes
Field.

Pizarro(5-0) was very good in the win. He surrendered only 10 hits and 1 walk
in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.83. Milwaukee banged out 13 on the
afternoon.

Ron Kline(2-8) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 innings of
work. Pizarro was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I
felt pretty confident in my pitches this afternoon. But, I had great support
behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well
called game!'
