Red Schoendienst had 3 base hits as the New York Giants defeated the Chicago
Cubs by the score of 7 to 3 at the Polo Grounds.

New York scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning when they tallied 4 runs
on 1 hit. The key offensive moment was provided by Gail Harris who came
through for the home fans when he tripled clearing the bases. New York
finished with 8 hits while Chicago ended up with 5.

The win went to Al Worthington(4-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Turk
Lown(1-2) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 4 runs in 2 innings and
saw his ERA increase from 2.22 to 3.26.

What an evening for the Milwaukee Braves! They shellacked the Brooklyn Dodgers
pitching for 9 runs while Gene Conley(6-1), with relief help from Dave Jolly,
mystified Brooklyn.

Conley gave Milwaukee a solid outing. He surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk in 5
innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.68 to 2.38. Milwaukee out-hit Brooklyn
for the game, 11 hits to 4.

Jolly earned his 2nd save. Johnny Podres(6-5) was hit with the loss.
Milwaukee scored big getting 6 runs off him in 5 innings.


ST. LOUIS AT PHILADELPHIA

Robin Roberts went the distance as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the St.
Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to 2 at Connie Mack Stadium.

Roberts(6-4) gave Philadelphia a solid outing. He didn't allow much, just 8
hits and no walks in 9 innings. St. Louis went down without a fight in the
9th.

Larry Jackson(2-5) took the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Don Hoak hit a homerun and scored 3 times as the Cincinnati Redlegs won in
dramatic fashion over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 6 to 5 at Forbes
Field.

Cincinnati had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they scored
4 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Jerry Lynch who
silenced the stadium when he depressed the partisan hometown fans with a
grand slam home run (his 1st of the season). Pittsburgh was not lacking for
run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as
they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames.

Tom Acker(3-3) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Raul Sanchez gained
credit for his 2nd save. Roy Face(2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief.
He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 3 innings.

Birdie Tebbetts was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and
win it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see
the fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win tonight!'
