Another two homer night for Smokey. Burgess has hit two homeruns in three games this year and has a total of 7 on the season. The seldom used catcher for the Cincinnati Redlegs provided alot of the punch in the Rhinelanders 10-4 win Wednesday night over the hapless New York Giants. Smokey drove in 7 runs with a grand slam in the first and a three run job in the third. Both were served up by this years "punching bag" Ruben Gomez. Gomez has given up 22 "Round trippers" at a clip of 1.72 per nine innings. In his last 14 innings pitched he has been tatooed four times. The victory coupled with a Milwaukee and Philadelphia loss, enabled the Redlegs to catch the front runners and join them in a three team share of first place. They all have 41-26 marks and watch out for Brooklyn. The defending National League Champs are in fourth place one game back with a 39-26 record. The Flatbush Flock drilled the Braves 9-6 as Jim "Junior" Gilliam went 3 for four with 4 rbi and two stolen bases. Gilliam has raised his average to .236 while hitting .298 for the month of June. Gilliam, who's high water mark for the season is just .238 had a couple of real bad months in April and May. In April Junior hit just .152 and his May wasn't much better at .212. Another player who has seemed to turn it around is Myron "Moe" Drabowsky. In his last three starts for the Cubs, Moe has completed each game and has allowed only 3 runs over that course, winning two games with one no decision. His ERA dropped from a disgusting 6.34 to a less disgusting 4.67. Over those last 27 innings, he has been victimized only once with the long ball. Last night he slowed down the Pittsburgh Pirates on 5 hits in beating them 7-1 after Corsairs beat the Bruins in lidlifter 7-5.The other factor in the three way tie happened in St. Louis where the strugglling Cardinals beat the high flying Phils 4-1. Lindy McDaniel had a good outing, but needed relief help from Llyod Merritt to preserve the win. Posted by Picasa
