Games of Tuesday July the 16th, 1957

Well you can see by the score and check the boxscore out that Warren Spahn bested Harvey Haddix in their show down match for first place in the National League. The Braves scored four runs in the first inning off the crafty lefty Haddix, with three consecutive homeruns. Mathews, Aaron and newly acquired Vernel "Nippy" Jones. It could have been four straight but for Andy Pafko pulling a #15 on a 1-14 Connie Mack homerun split.

In the 5th inning New York scored 2 runs. The key at-bat was by Bobby Thomson
who thrilled the crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 2nd of the
season). Chicago threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Johnny Antonelli(6-5) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 8 innings.
Antonelli got relief help from Marv Grissom who gained credit for his 10th
save. Don Elston(2-6) was the losing pitcher.

approaching the batter's box. He smashed a two-run homer in the 3rd inning
and cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 25th of the season) in
the 9th inning. Milwaukee totaled 9 on the night.

The win was credited to Trowbridge(4-1) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.

inning and laced a one-base hit in the 6th inning. Brooklyn bats were very
productive in the 1st inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits and the 2nd

team managed to score after the 4th inning.
