Games of Tuesday July the 23rd, 1957

Well all the teams arrived at their mid-western destinations, but some of the same results were posted. In St. Louis, the Cards dropped another game, this time to the 4th place Brooklyn Dodgers and Johnny Podres. In the game Duke Snider hit two more homeruns, ( now his rate jumped from a minus 6 to a minus 3) and knocked in four to bring his league leading total to 80. The Phillies helped their cause and the Cincinnati Redlegs too. Quakers knocked off first place Milwaukee to allow the Rhinelanders and themselves to move back to one and one half games off the pace. Cincy beat the Pirates and the Cubs Dick Drott had another great outing shutting the door on the last place Giants 6-nil. Bruins are now 2 and a half games on top of the Giants in the race to avoid the basement.

New York Giants by a score of 6 to 0.

Drott(5-11) came through with a virtuoso performance against the New York
hitters. He surrendered only 3 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his
ERA to 4.54. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was
able to score again.

Ray Monzant(0-3) was the loser. He gave up 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of

Johnny Klippstein was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Cincinnati Redlegs pulled out a win over the Pittsburgh
Pirates by a score of 4 to 2 at Crosley Field.

Cincinnati had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs
on 2 hits. George Crowe led off and started the attack as he slapped a
base-hit. After an out was recorded, Jerry Lynch came up and he cleared the
fences for a two-run home run (his 6th of the season) making Cincinnati the
winners and sending the 19,000 fans home happy. Both teams ended up with 7
on the night.

The winning pitcher was Klippstein(6-6) who allowed 2 runs for the game. The
loss was charged to Vern Law(8-5). Cincinnati continued their winnings ways
improving their record to 57-35. They are 9-1 in their last ten games.
Pittsburgh can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a
miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.

hits. It was enough to earn the victory. Milwaukee threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.

Simmons(9-7) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The losing pitcher
was Bob Buhl(8-6). He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.

'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Fred Haney 'but it's losing the close ones
that really hurt.'

season) in the 5th inning. Brooklyn won despite being out-hit by St. Louis
12 hits to 5.
