In games around the National League on Wednesday July the 17th, the Milwaukee Braves made it two in a row over the Phillies and now have taken a game and a half lead over Quakers in occupying the top spot in the standings. Lew Burdette bested Robin Roberts who scattered 16 hits in 8 innings of work. Three of those hits went to Eddie Mathews, who hit his 23rd homerun of the season and now is hitting a robust .331, good enough for 5th spot amoungst the leaders. Don Newcombe was on his game Wednesday. Newk tossed a seven hit shutout at the Cardinals
as the Dodgers beat the struggling Redbirds 6-nil. Myron "Moe" Drabowsky retired the first 23 Pirates to face him at Pittsburgh and then had to hold off the Buccos in the 9th as Bruins made it two straight over Corsairs. The other game was Cincinnati beating the Giants at the Polo Grounds by a score of 3-2. Curt Barclay had a great game going until Jerry Lynch's wind aided blooper down the right fiield line made into the seats for the margin of victory in the 7th inning.
