On Thursday, the 11th of July the Philadelphia Phillies got two magnificent pitching performances in beating the Chicago Cubs twice and taking a one game lead in the standings over second place Milwaukee. Harvey Haddix continues to roll on as he threw a complete game 6 hitter while striking out 11. Phils beat the Cubs in lidlifter 10-3. It was his 6th time this season striking out at least ten in one game. In the night cap, Jack Sanford duplicated the complete game with his own 6 hit, 11 strikeout performance in a 9-1 Philly win. Sanford's record now is 5 and 6 with an ERA at 3.85. Haddix is at 2.15 with a 9 and two ledger. Harvey is leading the league with 114 strikeouts and Sanford is number two on that list with 93 K's. In other action, Brooklyn got shutout pitching from McDevitt, Labine and Koufax in beating the Redlegs 5-nil. Lindy McDaniel had a route going performance in leading the Cards over the Giants 3-2. McDaniel also allowed 6 hits but only noctched 2 strikeouts in winning for the 6th time this year. In the other game at Pittsburgh the Milwaukee Braves hit three homeruns and beat the Bucs 5-3. Mathews (21), Crandall (6) and Torre (2) hit circut clouts for the Braves who lost Billy Bruton for the season on a collison with Felix Mantilla. Bruton finished the season with a .283 average, which was actually a little higher then his .278, but his power numbers and stealing was down. Plus Billy scored 14 fewer runs then he actually did in 1957. This is the result of the Braves not hitting like they should be.
