The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Milwaukee Braves in 11 innings at Forbes
Field by the score of 6 to 5.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Pittsburgh
pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Frank Thomas stroked a base-hit.
Dee Fondy came next and he lined a single. Dick Groat then laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Roman Mejias came up and he lashed a single resulting in a
mighty exciting win for Pittsburgh and the 11,955 home town fans in
attendance. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
The victory was credited to Bob Smith(2-3) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Don McMahon(0-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 3 and 1/3 innings
giving up 4 hits and 3 walks.
