Games of Friday, August 2nd, 1957



The Milwaukee Braves are starting to close the gap on the Cincinnati Redlegs homerun pace. These three Braves helped Lean Gene Conley beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 8-1 in the opening of a key weekend series for the Brooks. Flock lost as did the other contenders as the Braves increased their lead to four games.

Vern Law came through with a solid 9 innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat
the Chicago Cubs in 10 innings by a score of 3 to 2.

Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Pittsburgh won the
hard fought contest in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Gene
Freese cracked a solo homerun (his 2nd of the season). The game was a
scoreless duel until the 8th inning.

Law(10-5) got the win allowing 2 runs in 9 innings. Roy Face gained credit for
his 12th save. The losing pitcher was Turk Lown(1-7) in relief. He gave up
3 runs in 2 innings of work.

The New York Giants nipped the Cincinnati Redlegs 3 to 2 at Crosley Field in a
hard fought contest.

Curt Barclay(5-9) struggled at times, but was good enough to get the victory.
He gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Neither team managed to score
after the 4th inning.

Marv Grissom earned his 12th save. Hal Jeffcoat(11-5) was the losing pitcher.
He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 2 walks in 7
innings.

'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Barclay said.

Del Crandall cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves defeated
the Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 8 to 1 at County Stadium.

Gene Conley(8-4) pitched a fine game. He went 8 innings allowing 7 hits and 3
walks. For the game Milwaukee out-hit Brooklyn 13 to 7.

Johnny Podres(8-7) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits

Larry Jackson delivered 9 solid innings at Sportsman's Park where the St.
Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5 to 1.

St. Louis had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning. St.
Louis managed only 6 on the night. Jackson(7-8) lasted until the end
allowing 1 run for the win. Jack Sanford(6-10) absorbed the loss.
