Games of Monday, July 29th, 1957

Only three games on the schedule for this Monday in late July of 1957. Phillies pounded the Cubs 12-2, while the last place Giants took the first place Braves in 11 innings. At St.Louis, the Pittsburgh Pirates started a rookie named Charles "Whammy" Douglas. Well the "Whampster" kept the "whammy" on the St. Louis Cardinals with a 5-2 win over the much under achieving Redbirds. Oh, by the way, the Cardinals were in first place on this day in the real 1957 National League. It is not known for sure, but roomer has it that "fantasy Cardinal fan" invented this phrase.
"This Sucks man".

Robin Roberts went the distance as the Philadelphia Phillies smashed the
overmatched Chicago Cubs, 12 to 2.

Ed Bouchee had a big day with his bat. He stroked a base-hit in the 1st
inning, delivered a single in the 3rd inning and rifled a three-run blast
(his 17th of the season) in the 4th inning. Philadelphia dominated
offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

Roberts(8-10), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Don
Elston(2-9) was given the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 9
runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

In a two run game the New York Giants got by the Milwaukee Braves in 14
innings by the score of 5 to 3.

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. New York won the
hard fought contest in the 14th inning. After an out was recorded, Whitey
Lockman started the attack as he drew a walk. Ray Monzant got his chance to
keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Willie Mays then drew a
walk. Ozzie Virgil stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases. Don
Mueller stepped into the box and lined a single scoring two baserunners.
Milwaukee was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 14th.

The win went to Monzant(1-4) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Juan
Pizarro(6-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He had trouble throwing strikes
and issued 6 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

and 4 walks in 6 innings. Pittsburgh banged out 8 on the night.

Douglas got help from Bob Smith who was credited with his 6th save. Vinegar
Bend Mizell(4-4) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 7 hits
