Games of Sunday July the 28th, 1957

390 games in the book and my real soar spot in this replay is the St. Louis Cardinals. They dropped two more games today and now are twenty-two games below five hundred! If they were to reach their actual record for 1957, the Cardinals would have to win 50 of their last 59 games. Fat chance there bub. Who are the main culprits letting the Cardinals down? Take a look at their pitchers. Capitol "P" Capitol "U"! They stink big time. Listen to these numbers. Of the ten pitchers who have toed the pitcher's slab this year for the Cards, not counting those who have logged less then twenty innings, only one is giving up less hits per nine innings and three are giving up totals of +1.9, +2.4, and +1.8 more hits per nine innings of work. Yikes! Six of those ten pitchers are walking more batters then they did in real life and Larry Jackson is a +1.3 to lead in that department. Six are giving up the long ball at a higher rate, with young Von McDaniel serving up a +.9 or almost one more homerun per nine innings of work. Eight out of the ten pitchers are supporting higher ERA then actual. Six of those range from a +1.31 all the way to +2.20. And half of those are +1.87 and higher. One hates to see such a disparity in their replay and questions come up as to the authenticity of the game or maybe the computer being used. Two hundred and twenty one more games...I hope they can start to even out a little more.

Bobby Adams had 2 base hits as the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies
by a score of 4 to 2.

Tom Poholsky(3-4) labored throughout the game but hung around to record a
victory. He gave up 2 runs, 9 hits and 1 walk in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Philadelphia was retired without difficulty in the 9th.

Dick Littlefield recorded his 2nd save. Curt Simmons(9-8) was given the loss.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without
his best stuff,' Bob Scheffing said after the game. 'Poholsky did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

on base in his perfect 2/3 of an inning. The right-handed Lawrence had his
no-hit bid broken up by Johnny Podres who singled with nobody out in the 6th

Mazeroski had a big day against St. Louis. He clubbed a three-run home run
(his 8th of the season) in the 1st inning, doubled bringing in two
baserunners in the 4th inning and stroked a base-hit in the 6th inning.

the loss. He was touched for 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings.
