Games of Wednesday, August 7th, 1957





Braves smash three more homeruns. Mathews hit his 26th, Covington hit his 12th and also went 4 for four raising his average to .320, and Red Schoendienst hit his tenth, but only his first as a Milwaukee Brave. It was the first homerun for almost two months for the "Red Head", June 9th was his last for the Giants. The Braves have now hit 117 homeruns, but still trail the Redlegs by 38!

Don Newcombe pitched a complete game as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the New
York Giants by the score of 5 to 2 at Ebbets Field.

Brooklyn came up with 3 runs in the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits. The
big moment was provided by Roy Campanella who thrilled the crowd when he
lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 12th of the season).
Brooklyn finished with 9 hits in the victory.

The win was credited to Newcombe(11-7) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs.
Johnny Antonelli(8-8) was tagged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

With this win, Brooklyn has a 61-45 record. They have been 4-6 lately. With
this loss, New York has a 3-7 record of late, 37-72, worst in the league
overall.

Gene Conley completed the game without help from the bullpen and Wes Covington
had 4 hits as the dominant Milwaukee Braves outscored the Cincinnati Redlegs
6 to 3.

Milwaukee took the lead off Brooks Lawrence in the first inning with 3 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Frank Torre keyed the
rally when he reached on an error. Eddie Mathews stepped into the batter's
box and he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 26th of the season).
After another out, Covington stepped in and he ripped a solo home run (his
12th of the season). Milwaukee totaled 15 on the night.

Conley(9-4), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory.
Lawrence(10-8) took the loss. He allowed Milwaukee 5 runs in 3 innings of
work.

Milwaukee now has a record of a league leading 67-40. Cincinnati has a record
of 63-43 after the loss.

Herm Wehmeier allowed Fred Hutchinson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the league door-mat
Chicago Cubs by the count of 4 to 2.

Wehmeier(6-7) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 9 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings improving his ERA from 5.34 to 4.89. St. Louis had 7
hits for the night.

Dick Drott(5-13) suffered the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 and
