Games of Wednesday, July the 31st, 1957

Phils climbed to within two and a half games of front running Milwaukee with a 6-4 win over Redlegs. Quackers got help from Pennsylvania partners, the Pirates as Corsairs, behind Bob Purkey and Roy Face beat the Braves. In other action around the Senior Circuit, the Cubs swept the Brooklyn Dodgers in another make up double header, while Cardinals made it two straight over languishing Giants. Now that we have completed the month of July, let us count up the number of players who are a plus .25 or higher in their batting average. 19 players in the National League, eight from Philadelphia, are batting 25 percentage points above their actual 1957 average, led by Milwaukee's Del Crandall, who is 54 points higher then his actual. Seventeen are hitting less then 25 percentage points below their actual average...led by Gino Cimoli, who is seventy four points lower then his actual average. He has to have two great months back to back if he is gonna make up that deficit.
