Bob Friend whiffed 10 batters and Bill Virdon had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the
Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Brooklyn Dodgers in 11 innings by a score of 10
to 9 at Ebbets Field.

The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh came out the
victor in the 11th inning. Virdon led off and started the attack as he
smacked a single. Two outs later Frank Thomas came up and he popped a
two-run clout over the fence (his 13th of the season). This was the kind of
game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

The victory went to Roy Face(5-4) who went 3 innings, allowing 1 run. Clem
Labine(4-6) was tagged with the loss in relief.

Pittsburgh now has a record of 59-58. Brooklyn has a record of 67-50 after
the loss.

Games of Saturday, August 17th, 1957. The Cincinnati Redlegs have drawn to within 1 and a half games of front running Milwaukee with their 5-4 win over Chicago. Hal Jeffcoat won his 14th of the season against 5 loses with relief help from Buster Freeman...14th save. In the game George Crowe hit his 35th of the year and Ernie Banks hit number 32 for the Cubs, to remain in second place in the homerun derby chase. The Milwaukee Braves lost their 4th game in a row as the St. Louis Cardinals pasted the league leaders 10-6. The Redbirds took their year long frustration out on Braves starter Lew Burdette, routing the Milwaukee right hander for six runs early. The Braves hit four homeruns, but made only 6 runs on the day. Henry Aaron became the third player to reach the thirty homerun plateau as he hit one of the Braves four bombs. Ruben Gomez of the New York Giants pitched a complete game, 9 strikeout performance against the slumping Phillies. The Quakers are now in fourth place, 6 and a half games out of first. the Brooklyn Dodgers made it two in a row over the Pirates and are only four games out in third place with a 4-2 win over Bucs at Ebbets Field. Gil Hodges hit his 21st homerun getting three hits on the day. The hitting hero today was "Flakey Joe" Cunningham of the Cardinals going 4 for 5 with his 12th homerun of the season. Posted by Picasa

Don Elston, pictured here with his Brooklyn card, tossed a beautiful 2 hit shutout of the Cincinnati Redlegs for his third win of the season for his present club the Chicago Cubs. Don has been roughed up most of the year. He has lost ten times and his ERA after the nine shut out innings dropped to 6.19. Two other shutouts were turned in on this Friday, August 16th, 1957. Both pitchers who turned the trick have been having troublesome years too. Johnny Antonelli surrendered only 4 hits in checking the Phillies, while Lindy McDaniel and his slumping St. Louis Cardinals stopped the front running Milwaukee Braves on 7 hits in their 2-nil win over the now losing three in a row Braves. Their lead stays at 2 and a half over the Redlegs with their loss to the Cubs. The other game for the day would have been a shutout too, but Johnny Podres got careless with Bob Skinner in the top of the ninth with two out and one man on board. Skinner hit a hanging curve onto Bedford Avenue and narrowed the gap to 3-2. Easy Ed Roebuck came on and got the save after issuing a walk for the Flock Posted by Picasa

Vinegar Bend Mizell took a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the St. Louis
Cardinals defeated the ice-cold Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 2 at Wrigley
Field.

Mizell(6-5) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 4
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. The left-handed Mizell lost his chance for a
no-hitter when Lee Walls singled with nobody out in the 7th inning. St.
Louis managed only 2 on the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Dick Drott(5-14). It was a tough loss for him as he
did not allow an earned run in his 6 innings of work.

With this win, St. Louis has a 47-65 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Bob
Scheffing was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering
along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it
done.'

One run was the difference at the Polo Grounds as the New York Giants defeated
the Brooklyn Dodgers in 11 innings 3 to 2.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. New York won the game in the
11th inning. Valmy Thomas laced a one-base hit. After an out was recorded,
Danny O'Connell stepped in and he drew a walk. Willie Mays then doubled
giving New York the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. New York
and Brooklyn each finished the afternoon with 9 hits.

Marv Grissom(3-6) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. Ed Roebuck(4-5) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 4
hits in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Roy McMillan hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Cincinnati Redlegs topped the
Milwaukee Braves by a score of 5 to 2 at Crosley Field.

Milwaukee fell behind quickly as the Cincinnati offense came through in the
first inning as they scored 3 runs on 1 base hits. That was all Brooks
Lawrence(11-8) needed. Cincinnati managed 8 in their victory.

Don Gross earned the save, his 5th. Bob Buhl(11-8) suffered the loss. He
pitched 4 innings giving up 4 hits and 1 walk.

Vern Law pitched a complete game shutout and Bill Virdon ripped 2 homeruns and
had 5 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 8 to 0.

Virdon was really in 'the zone'. He tripled scoring two baserunners in the
1st inning, doubled bringing in a run in the 5th inning, delivered a solo
blast in the 7th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 12th of
the season) in the 9th inning. Pittsburgh finished with 18 hits in the
victory.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Law(12-5). The loss was charged to Curt
Simmons(10-11). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 4 runs in 3
innings.

'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Virdon said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'

7,064 fans watched an exciting game at the Polo Grounds. The Brooklyn Dodgers
put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 7th inning and topped the hopeless New
York Giants by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Brooklyn ended up winning it in the 10th
inning. Duke Snider lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 29th of the season).
New York had 11 hits in the game while Brooklyn had 7, but Brooklyn had the
more timely hits.

Clem Labine(3-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Ray Monzant(2-6) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Hal Jeffcoat completed the game without help from the bullpen and right
fielder Wally Post had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Crosley Field as the
Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Milwaukee Braves 5 to 1.

Cincinnati jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring a
single run. Cincinnati won despite being out-hit by Milwaukee 10 hits to 7.

Jeffcoat(13-5) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Warren Spahn(14-10)
was tagged with the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings.

In a thriller the St. Louis Cardinals staged a dramatic comeback then held on
to win over the reeling Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 3 at Wrigley
Field.

St. Louis scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 4
base hits. After an out was recorded, Al Dark kicked off the action when he
stroked a base-hit. Hobie Landrith stepped up next and he drew a walk.
Bobby Gene Smith then ripped a base-knock scoring a run. Wally Moon was up
next and he lashed a single plating one more runner. Don Blasingame came to
the plate and doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Hoyt Wilhelm
relieved and was untouched by Chicago as he recorded the save, his 9th.

Sam Jones(5-10) went 8 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. The loss was
charged to Moe Drabowsky(9-11). After the game, it took a long while before
Bob Scheffing emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a
couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very
talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll
find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the St. Louis locker room.'

Vinegar Bend Mizell took a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the St. Louis
Cardinals defeated the ice-cold Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 2 at Wrigley
Field.

Mizell(6-5) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 4
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. The left-handed Mizell lost his chance for a
no-hitter when Lee Walls singled with nobody out in the 7th inning. St.
Louis managed only 2 on the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Dick Drott(5-14). It was a tough loss for him as he
did not allow an earned run in his 6 innings of work.

With this win, St. Louis has a 47-65 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Bob
Scheffing was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering
along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it
done.'

One run was the difference at the Polo Grounds as the New York Giants defeated
the Brooklyn Dodgers in 11 innings 3 to 2.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. New York won the game in the
11th inning. Valmy Thomas laced a one-base hit. After an out was recorded,
Danny O'Connell stepped in and he drew a walk. Willie Mays then doubled
giving New York the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. New York
and Brooklyn each finished the afternoon with 9 hits.

Marv Grissom(3-6) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. Ed Roebuck(4-5) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 4
hits in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Roy McMillan hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Cincinnati Redlegs topped the
Milwaukee Braves by a score of 5 to 2 at Crosley Field.

Milwaukee fell behind quickly as the Cincinnati offense came through in the
first inning as they scored 3 runs on 1 base hits. That was all Brooks
Lawrence(11-8) needed. Cincinnati managed 8 in their victory.

Don Gross earned the save, his 5th. Bob Buhl(11-8) suffered the loss. He
pitched 4 innings giving up 4 hits and 1 walk.

Vern Law pitched a complete game shutout and Bill Virdon ripped 2 homeruns and
had 5 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 8 to 0.

Virdon was really in 'the zone'. He tripled scoring two baserunners in the
1st inning, doubled bringing in a run in the 5th inning, delivered a solo
blast in the 7th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 12th of
the season) in the 9th inning. Pittsburgh finished with 18 hits in the
victory.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Law(12-5). The loss was charged to Curt
Simmons(10-11). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 4 runs in 3
innings.

'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Virdon said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'
