Bob Friend whiffed 10 batters and Bill Virdon had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the
Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Brooklyn Dodgers in 11 innings by a score of 10
to 9 at Ebbets Field.
The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh came out the
victor in the 11th inning. Virdon led off and started the attack as he
smacked a single. Two outs later Frank Thomas came up and he popped a
two-run clout over the fence (his 13th of the season). This was the kind of
game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.
The victory went to Roy Face(5-4) who went 3 innings, allowing 1 run. Clem
Labine(4-6) was tagged with the loss in relief.
Pittsburgh now has a record of 59-58. Brooklyn has a record of 67-50 after
the loss.
