Game from Tuesday, August 13th, 1957

No games were played on Monday and the series switched home fields for all of the 8 National League teams. But much the same results. Braves beat the second place Redlegs and now have a four and one half game lead over Rhinelanders. Lou Burdette did the honors for the Braves allowing only two meaningless homeruns to the Redlegs' George Crowe and Frank Robinson. Crowe hit 31 in reality but has now gone over by three with his 34th dinger of the season. I know...dinger wasn't invented yet...how '''bout "Boundry Belt".

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the floundering Chicago Cubs by a score of 8
to 5 at Wrigley Field.

St. Louis brought 3 runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning when
they had 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Wally Moon opened up the
rally as he doubled. Del Ennis next to the plate and he reached on an error.
Ken Boyer then hit a deep fly bringing in a run. Hobie Landrith was up next
and he smashed a two-run homer (his 3rd of the season). For the game St.
Louis out-hit Chicago 15 to 10.

Herm Wehmeier(7-7) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Bob Rush(8-5)
took the loss. He was unable to control the St. Louis offense and allowed 12
hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.

With this win, St. Louis has a 46-65 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Bob
Scheffing was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering
along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it
done.'

Eddie Mathews had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Lew Burdette completed the game without
help from the bullpen as the Milwaukee Braves defeated the Cincinnati Redlegs
9 to 2 at Crosley Field.

Mathews provided much of the offense. He lashed a single in the 4th inning,
tripled which scored a run in the 5th inning, laced a one-base hit in the 7th
inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 27th of the season) in the
9th inning. Offensively, Milwaukee was a juggernaut. They scored in 6
separate innings.

Burdette(11-8) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Joe
Nuxhall(6-6) was given the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and no walks in 5
innings.

The Brooklyn Dodgers came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 6 to
5.

Brooklyn had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits.
After an out was recorded, Pee Wee Reese started the rally when he drew a
walk. Duke Snider was next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run
home run (his 28th of the season). Brooklyn and New York each finished the
night with 7 hits.

Clem Labine(2-5) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Marv Grissom(2-6)
was the loser in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.

Bill Rigney was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Walter Alston will be glad to talk about
the game as long as you have questions to ask.'
