Games of Sunday August 11th, 1957

Only five game where played on this hot Sunday afternoon around the National League. The double header scheduled for Cincinnati between the Chicago Cubs and the Redlegs was postponed because of inclement weather. Not much to report other then the Braves have a 3 game lead in the loss column over idle Cincy and seven games over Phillies and Brooklyn.

Curt Barclay tossed a complete game and Bobby Thomson homered and had 2 RBI as
the New York Giants topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 11 to 2 at
the Polo Grounds.

New York came up with 5 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 6 hits. They
ended up being the winning runs. New York totaled 18 on the afternoon.

Barclay(7-9) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Harvey Haddix(9-5)
ended up with the loss. New York scored big getting 5 runs off him in 3 and
1/3 innings.

'We didn't have a whole lot of chances today,' Mayo Smith said. 'Barclay just
was too much for our guys.'

Jack Sanford held New York to 3 hits at the Polo Grounds as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the lifeless New York Giants in 10 innings by the count of 3 to
2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Philadelphia won the game in the 10th
inning. After an out was recorded, Chuck Harmon delivered a one-base hit.
Harmon was running on the next pitch and he stole second. One out later, Rip
Repulski came up and he hit a single scoring the run. Repulski took second
on the throw. Philadelphia banged out 10 on the afternoon.

Sanford(7-11), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Ray
Monzant(2-5) suffered the loss in relief. Bill Rigney was obviously
impressed with the pitching of Sanford, 'That guy made us look a little silly
out there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything
was working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of
his system.'

28,072 fans watched an exciting game at Sportsman's Park. The Milwaukee
Braves topped the St. Louis Cardinals by the slimmest of margins, 4 to
3.

Gene Conley(10-4) had a fairly solid outing. He surrendered 8 hits and 2
walks in 7 innings. St. Louis had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.

Conley got help from Don McMahon who earned his 7th save. Larry Jackson(7-10)
was tagged with the loss in relief. 'I had a little blister on my index
finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Conley said. 'I was
lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'

9,964 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field. The Brooklyn Dodgers
topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Brooklyn was victorious
in the 10th inning. Jim Gilliam tripled. Pee Wee Reese came next and he
banged out a single scoring the run. Both teams totaled 11 on the afternoon.

Clem Labine(1-5) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 and 2/3 innings. The loss
was charged to Roy Face(4-4) in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 1
inning.

Dick Groat had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Whammy Douglas completed the game
without help from the bullpen at Forbes Field where the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 6 to 3.

Douglas(2-0) pitched a solid game. He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 9
innings. Pittsburgh rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.

Don Newcombe(11-8) ended up with the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 2 innings of
work.
