Vern Law pitched a beauty agaisnt the Phils to vault the Pirates to their 58th win and two games over five hundred. It was Vern's 12th win of the season. Bill Virdon hit two homeruns and had a double and a triple to lead the 18 hit attack against the Quakers. Virdon's last homerun was an inside the park job that hit a rounded area on the big right field wall and bounded into the right field corner. Virdon made it standing up. At the close of the day on August 14th, 1957 the actual standings were as follows. Milwuakee had a 70-42 mark. In second place was the St. Louis Cardinals with a 63-49...seven back. Third place belonged to the Brooklyn Dodgers with a 63-50 ledger...seven and a half out. Fourth place was Cincinnati at 61-51, while Philadelphia was 59-54. Sixth place was the New York Giants at 52-63. The Cubs were in 7th with a 41 and 69 mark. The Pirates were in last place with a 41 and 72 record. In my replay so far the Buccos are 58 and 56 seventeen wins over their actual record.
