Eddie Mathews ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves defeated
the Cincinnati Redlegs by the score of 7 to 4 at Crosley Field.

Milwaukee came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Del Crandall led off and keyed the rally when
he doubled. After an out was recorded, Frank Torre came up and he doubled
resulting in a run. Mathews then cracked a two-run shot (his 33rd of the
season). Both teams ended up with 12 on the afternoon.

The win was credited to Ernie Johnson(6-3) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run.
Johnson got help from Don McMahon who was credited with his 11th save. Tom
Acker(6-8) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 3 hits
and no walks.

Milwaukee now has a record of a league leading 77-52. Cincinnati has a record
of 74-55 after the loss.

28,920 fans watched an exciting game at Ebbets Field. The New York Giants
topped the Brooklyn Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.

Ray Crone(6-11) was solid if not spectacular. He was reached for 8 hits and 2
walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Brooklyn had a chance to come back in the 9th
but they came up short.

Marv Grissom got the save, his 16th. Johnny Podres(10-9) absorbed the loss.
New York continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 6 games and
counting.

Ernie Banks had 2 base hits and 5 RBI as the Chicago Cubs won in dramatic
fashion over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 4 at Wrigley
Field.

Chicago came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Chuck Tanner led off the inning for Chicago
when he laced a base-knock. Lee Walls followed and he drew a walk. After an
out was recorded, Banks stepped in and he stroked a single giving Chicago the
victory and sending the 5,856 home-town fans home happy. This was a game of
many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5
times in all.

Turk Lown(2-7) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Hoyt Wilhelm(1-6) was
the loser in relief. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk in 1/3 of an inning.

PITTSBURGH AT PHILADELPHIA

Bob Purkey tossed a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 7 to 2 at Connie Mack
Stadium.

Pittsburgh scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning when they had 3 base hits. The
early run support proved sufficient for Purkey(10-10) and Pittsburgh. That
was all the run support Purkey required. Pittsburgh had 10 hits for the
afternoon.

Robin Roberts(10-14) ended up with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 4
innings of work.

Whammy Douglas(3-1) and Curt Simmons(11-14) treated the Philadelphia fans to a
fine pitching duel at Connie Mack Stadium. The Pittsburgh Pirates eventually
emerged as victors over the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 2 to
1.

Douglas gave Pittsburgh a solid outing. He was reached for 5 hits and 5 walks
in 6 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.71 to 3.27. Philadelphia
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.

Roy Face recorded the save, his 13th. The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now
stands at 65-65. With this loss, Philadelphia has a 6-4 record of late,
74-58 overall.
