Big Gene fired a nifty 5 hitter at the Phillies and won his 3rd game of the season as the Braves beat the Phils 4-1. Coupled with the Redlegs first loss after 8 straight wins, the Braves are now only one half game behind the front runners from Cincinnati.  Posted by Picasa


Dick Drott had been getting bombed everytime he took the mound so far in the young 1957 season. He was 0 and 4 with two of those loses coming in relief. "I just didn't feel comfortable out there", said the young right hander. In one outting he gave up 4 homeruns and really struggled with his control. "I started to take something off my fastball, and when I did that they teed off on my mistakes", he added. Well, the Cubs have been struggling all year long and going into the game at Forbes Field on Wednesday they had a lock on last place with a 3 and 16 mark. In Pittsburgh, it was cool and raining and Drott had his good stuff as he limited the Bucs to 1 hit, a blooper by Bill Virdon, struck out 6 and walked 2. In a good matchup it was the New York Giants 7, the St. Louis Cardinals 5 at
the Polo Grounds.

New York jumped on top of St. Louis in the 7th inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 2 hits. New York had 10 hits for the game and St. Louis had 6.

The win was credited to Johnny Antonelli(2-2) who went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 5 runs. Antonelli was helped out by Marv Grissom who recorded his
3rd save. Larry Jackson(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He
allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 2 innings.

Don Newcombe was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and Rube Walker had 2 base hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat
the Cincinnati Redlegs by a score of 8 to 6.

Brooklyn jumped on top of Cincinnati in the bottom of the 7th inning when they
scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Don Zimmer who brought a roar
from the partisan Ebbets Field fans when he popped a two-run clout over the
fence (his 5th of the season). Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th, but
they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The victory went to Newcombe(2-2) who went the distance allowing 6 runs.
Warren Hacker(1-1) was the losing pitcher. Walter Alston was in a talkative
mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close
ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll
savor this one for a little while.'

Gene Conley tossed a complete game at Connie Mack Stadium where the Milwaukee
Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 4 to 1.

Milwaukee came up with 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning when they had 3
base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Milwaukee managed 10 in
their victory.

Conley(3-0) allowed 1 run on the game. The loss was charged to Don
Cardwell(1-1). Milwaukee now has a record of 13-6. With this loss,
Philadelphia has a 6-4 record of late, 12-8 overall.

Dick Drott held Pittsburgh scoreless on just 1 hit as the Chicago Cubs topped
the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 0 at Forbes Field.

Drott(1-4) escaped virtually unscathed against the Pittsburgh hitters. He was
stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks in 9 innings.
Pittsburgh went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

Vern Law(1-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered
5 hits and no walks. Bobby Bragan was obviously impressed with the pitching
of Drott, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight. We just
couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope
that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

The "Coushatta Clubber", Joe Adcock was off to a terrible start for the Milwaukee Braves this season. Joe had 68 official at bats going into Tuesday's game with the Phillies off of ace Robin Roberts. Fred Haney asked him if he wanted to sit this game against one of the games great right handed pitchers. Adcock declined and took extra batting practice in the cage around 4:00 and it paid off. On his 69th official at bat for 1957, Joe clubbed his first homerun of the season off Roberts and then came back on his 70th at bat and slammed his second homerun of the season. Roberts has been tagged with ten "Dingers" so far this season and four times in the game against the Braves. Hal Jeffcoat had dream game at Ebbets Field on May 7th. He pitched a complete game 3 hit shutout of the Brooklyn Dodgers and hit the game winning homerun in the 8th inning to give the Redlegs their 8th straight win and a game an a half lead on second place Milwaukee. Posted by Picasa

Right fielder Del Ennis had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at The Polo Grounds where
the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Giants 12 to 3.

St. Louis drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
when they tallied 5 runs on 5 hits. That was all the runs Herm Wehmeier(2-2)
needed. St. Louis had 15 hits for the game and New York had 5.

Wehmeier got relief help from Bob Smith who gained credit for his 1st save.

Milwaukee started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first scoring a single run. Milwaukee had a total of 10 hits for the
game.

The win was credited to Spahn(3-2) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Robin Roberts(2-2) absorbed the loss. He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 8
and 2/3 innings of work.

Hal Jeffcoat allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the
scoreboard for Brooklyn as the streaking Cincinnati Redlegs outscored the
Brooklyn Dodgers 1 to 0.

Jeffcoat(3-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Brooklyn offense. He
gave up just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.09 to
3.66. The Brooklyn bats were silent in the bottom of the 9th.

Johnny Podres(2-2) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up only 5 hits
and 1 walk.Cincinnati extended their winning streak to 8 games. Birdie
Tebbetts was in a great frame of mind in the clubhouse after the game,
'Everybody's contributing now. Timely hitting, some slick fielding plays and
good pitching when we need it. Man, when that's happening, this sure is an
easy job!'

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago Cubs in 13 innings at Forbes Field by
the score of 7 to 6.

The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh won it in the
13th inning. After an out was recorded, Gene Freese became the sole author
of the rally when he cracked a bases-empty home run (his 1st of the season)
resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a raucous post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Chicago had 16 hits in the game while
Pittsburgh had 13, but Pittsburgh had the more timely hits.

Roy Face(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing no
runs. Jim Brosnan(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief.

Don Drysdale moved his record to a perfect 3 and oh with a microscopic 0.68 era in 27 innings of work for the Brooklyn Dodgers. So far this year he has tossed 3 complete games one a 2 hitter, a second a three hitter and today with a five hitter...thats' ten hits in 27 innings of work. Willie Mays had 2 base hits as the New York Giants outscored the Chicago Cubs
3 to 2.

New York wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning plating an
isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Don Mueller
doubled. After another out, Hank Sauer stepped in and he drew a walk. Gail
Harris then reached on an error. Ozzie Virgil was up next and he stroked a
base-hit scoring the run. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to
score.

The winning pitcher was Ruben Gomez(2-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 and 1/3
innings. Marv Grissom recorded the save, his 2nd. Don Kaiser(0-3) was the
loser.

Don Drysdale allowed Walter Alston to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game and Gino Cimoli had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated
the Milwaukee Braves 10 to 1 at Ebbets Field.

Brooklyn set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring one runner.
Brooklyn managed 14 in their victory.

The victory went to Drysdale(3-0) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Lew
Burdette(1-2) was charged with the loss. He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 2 innings.
