The National League won the twenty fourth annual All Star game with a near capacity
crowd of just under thirty thousand at St. Louis' Sportsman's Park. Duke Snider led
the Senior Circut with two hits and drove in two runs with a fifth inning boundry belt
that gave the Nationals a six-nil lead. The Senior Circut got off early with a run in
the first off of starter and loser Jim Bunning. Snider drilled a double into the
left center gap that Mickey Mantle just missed picking off with one out in the first.
Bunning got a tough out in Eddie Mathews on a short fly to right, but then home team
star Stan Musial ripped a single to right plating Snider. Stan "The Man" started things
off in the 3-run fourth for the National. He led off the inning and "strolled" and then
came around when Frank Robinson tripled between Mantle and Kaline in right center. Ernie
Banks then sent Mantle back to the warning track in left center and Robinson tagged and
scored without drawing a throw. Henry Aaron then capped the inning off with a blast
over the left center field fence just out of Mantle's reach, about ten feet further then
Bank's drive. All that damage was against Baltimore's Billy Loes. In the 5th, after Johnny
Temple singled and then stole second, Duke Snider drove an Early Wynn fastball over
the pavilion in right center for a 6 nothing count. In the 7th, the Americans got
their only run when Triandos hit a high drive down the left field line that Snider
almost took away from him. That run was quickly accounted for as Ed Bailey lined a
drive just over the fence in right field that Al Kaline just missed getting to. Then
American League almost got back into the game in the 8th but not for two great defensive
plays by Don Hoak at third. He first robbed Gus Triandos of a shot to left field with a diving
catch going to his left. That saved two runs easily. The very next batter was Frank
Malzone who lined a shot down the left field line and Hoak dove to his right and made a
beautiful backhand stab to retire the side. So all the AL did was leave the bases loaded with
no runs scoring in the inning.
Duke Snider hit one of three homeruns the National League hit against the American League and drove in two runs to win All Star MVP honors in leading the Nationals to a 7-1 win in St. Louis. Henry Aaron and Ed Bailey also hit for the distance for Senior Circut. the lone American League run came off the bat of Gus Triandos who homered off Warren Spahn to break up the shutout. Nellie Fox had two hits to lead the Junior Circut. Harvey Haddix gets the win pitching two innings of scoreless ball. American League starter, Jim Bunning got the loss.

Batting second from the White Sox, Nellie Fox playing secondbase. In the third slot is Detroit's Al Kaline, playing rightfield. Clean-up is the Yankee's Mickey Mantle in centerfield, followed by Boston's Ted Williams in left. Cleveland's Vic Wertz will bat next and play firstbase. The Yankees' Yogi Berra will be the American league's catcher, and Baltimore's George Kell gets the starting assignment at third. On the mound for the American Leaguers will be Detroit's Jim Bunning. Starters for the National League will have Stan Lopata of Philadelphia doing the catching. Lopata narrowly beat out Cincinnati's Ed Bailey. At firstbase we had a battle. St. Louis' stan Musial will start over Cincy's George Crowe, but Crowe has put up some big numbers including 26 homeruns along with 58 RBI. Don Blasingame beat out Johnny Temple at second by a close margin of 701,965 to 690,038. Thirdbase will be manned by Milwaukee's Eddie Mathews and Cincy's Don Hoak. Shortstop will be in the good hands of Ernie Banks with 25 homeruns thus far. His back up is Al Dark from the Cardinals. Frank Robinson (Cincinnati) will start in leftfield, Duke Snider (Brooklyn) in centerfield and Henry Aaron (Milwaukee) in right. Wally Moon (Cards), Willie Mays (Giants) and Wally Post (Redlegs) are the back ups. Don Drysdale (Brooklyn) will get the start on Tuesday and he is joined by other starting pitchers, Harvey Haddix (Philadelphia) the league with a 2.16 ERA. Haddix also leads in strikeouts with 103. Others are Milwaukee's Warren Spahn and the Phillies Don Cardwell. Cincinnati lefty Don Gross, who is tied with Spahn with ten victories, will join New York's Al Worthington, Pittsburgh's Vern Law, Clem Labine from Brooklyn and Buster Freeman from Cincinnati rounds out the twenty five man roster and are just relilef pitchers. Here is a list of players that are having very good seasons, but were left off of the 25 man roster. Brooklyn's Gil Hodges who is hitting .335 with 56 RBI will not make the trip to St. Louis. Philadelphia's Richie Ashburn (.333) and Ed Bouchee (.331) along with pitchers Johnny Podres from Brroklyn and El Roy Face from Pittsburgh. Walter Alston will manage the team with his assistants being Bob Scheffing from the Cubs and the Pirates Bobby Bragan
Seven games were on tap for this Sunday July 7th, 1957. After the Phils dropped the first two games of the series to Brooklyn they stormed back and swept the Sunday twin bill. Warren Hacker getting a start for his new team the Phils, tossed 8 and two thirds innings, scattering 7 hits in leading Quakers to 1-0 count in lidlifter. In the nightcap, Ed Bouchee drove home 4 runs in leading Phils to a 13-9 win in a sluggfest. The sweep coupled with the Milwaukee Braves loss brought both Milwaukee and the Phils dead even at 50-29 going into the All-Star break. The Braves can thank Dave Hillman, who only a few days earlier gave up 4 homeruns in a short relief stint scattered three hits in besting Braves 4-nil. The Giants have struggled all year but might be showing signs of turning it around with a sweep of the Buccos. Al "Red" Worthington tossed a fine two hitter at the Corsairs, striking out 7 in the route going performance. In the nightcap, Rueben Gomez had a solid outing in helping the Polo Grounders to a 4-2 verdict over the Bucs. The other double header on the schedule saw the Redlegs and Cardinals split a pair. Redbirds rallied in lidlifter for a 6-5 win, while Redlegs did the same in the nightcap 8-7. George Crowe hit his league leading 26th boundry belt of the season in nightcap. Stay tuned for the announcement of the All-Star selection and the starting lineups for both the American and National Leagues.

Four games were on tap for Saturday July 6th, 1957. Pittsburgh continued their winning ways with a 4-1 win over the New York Giants. Vern Law won his 8th against two loses. Vern went the distance, scattering 8 hits. Milwaukee, for the second day in a row came back against the Cubs to win 3-2. This time Eddie Mathews was the hero with a two run single in the bottom of the 10th. Hard luck pitcher, Dick Drott stymied the Braves through 9 innings on only 3 hits and one run. Warren Spahn pitched a complete game ten inning for his tenth win of the season. Big George Crowe got is homerun lead back when he had two boundry belts against the Cardinals in the Redlegs 12-2 lambasting. George has now 25 homeruns, one more then runner-up Ernie Banks. Johnny Klippstein went the distance for his fourth win of the season. Brooklyn downed the Phillies 7-1, with a big 6 run bottom of the 8th. Ed Roebuck won his 3rd in relief. With that win the Flatbush Flock is now in second place, four percentage points above the Phils. Milwaukee still leads the league with one day left before the All-Star break, by one and one half games over the Bums and Phils.

In games from Friday, July 5th, the Pittsburgh Pirates exploded late for 7 runs in their 9-2 win over hapless Giants. Cosairs improve to 37 and 40, good for fifth spot in the National League race, while the Polo Grounders are floundering in 7th place with a 26 and 51 mark. Milwaukee was trailing the equaly hapless Cubs 2-nil, but the Braves got a big two out hit from Henry Aaron in the bottom of the 8th, when Braves rallied with 3 runs to beat Bruins. Ernie Banks hit his league leading 24th homerun off of Bob Buhl, but Wrigleymen dropped their record to 21 and 51 and are in last place, twenty five and a half games behind Braves, who improved to 49-28. Cincinnati got 8 and two thirds strong innings from Joe Nuxhall, who got some help from Raul Sanchez in the combined shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Redbirds are really a big disappointment so far with their 30 and 44 record and 6th place seeding. The Rhinelanders improved to 45 and 32 and are 4 games off the pace. In Brooklyn, the Dodgers bumped off the hot Phillies by the score of 10-5. The big blow was Roy Campanella's grand slam homerun. It was Campy's third homerun in two days and gives him nine so far this season. Danny McDevitt was just tough enough to hang on to the victory. Bums bombed Robin Roberts for all ten runs and all were earned. Quakers slip to 48-28, half game out of first, and Bums improve to only a game behind second place Phils.

Three double headers top the 4th of July schedule in the National League in 1957. All three were double header sweeps as Brooklyn took two from the Pirates by scores of 7-2 and 6-2. St. Louis beat the Cubs twice 6-4 and 8-nil. The Phils took two from the New York Giants, beating the Polo Grounders 4-3 and one to nothing. Heroes for the day were Curt Simmons tossing a ten inning, 6 hit shutout, which put Quakers in first place, a half game in front of Milwaukee , who was pasted badly by Cincinnati 15-4. Another great job on the 4th went to Sam Jones, who tossed a six hitter at Chicago, striking out 8 Bruins along the way. In that same game, teammate Ken Boyer hammered two homeruns, which gives him 16 on the year. Kenny hit 19 that year so Mr. Boyer is way ahead of his pace. Another big basher for the day was Roy Campanella who hit two out in game one against Pittsburgh. It was homerun numbers 7 and 8 for Campy. The standings for the first four clubs are as follows, Philadelphia is 48 and 27. Milwaukee is only a half game back with a 48 and 28 mark. In third is Brooklyn with a 45 and 28 slate. That leaves them 2 and a half games off the pace. Cincinnati is 44 and 32 and are 4 and one half games off the front running Phils.

Del Crandall hit his 5th homerun of the season to give the Braves a come from behind win over the Cincinnati Redlegs 4-3 in ten innings. Henry Aaron hit his league tying 23rd of the season to bring the Braves to a 2-all dedlock in the 6th, while Eddie Mathews gave them the lead at 3-2 with his 19th homerun in the 8th. Braves win enabled them to take a one game lead over idle Phils. In other game Cards beat Cubs 7-6 with Wilhelm coaxing game ending double play after loading the bases for Cubs in bottom of 9th. Seven games on the 4th of July docket tomorrow. Stay tune folks.

In action on Tuesday the 2nd of July, two guys who haven't been heard for in a while made big noise. Remember Geroge Crowe and Frank Robinson, how they were terrorizing National League pitching in April and May? George had 19 homeruns on June llth to lead the league. Meanwhile he had hit only one homerun, on June 23rd, until he exploded with two today. Frank Robinson dropped below the .400 mark on June 9th, and fell as low as .361 with an oh for 6 on June 23rd against Pittsburgh, and lost his league leadership to Stan Musial. Well he had a 4 for four day against the Cubs (8 for his last 14) with two homeruns last night against Darius "Dave" Hillman pictured smiling before his relief stint Tuesday. Big Dave, with a more serioulsy look on his face after giving up back to back homeruns twice to Crowe and Robinson, four dingers in all. The Redlegs drubbed the Cubs 11-3. In other action Wes Covington provided all the offense needed for Warren Spahn in a 4-nil shutout of St. Louis for the veteran southpaw. It was Spahnie's 4th shutout of the year. Covington hit two homeruns to lead Brave's attack. In the only other game the New York Giants cooled off the hot Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 4-1. Curt Barclay needed 9th inning relief help from Marv Grisson to best "The Barber", Sal Maglie. Braves, by virtue of their win and the Phillies off day, have reclaimed first place by a half game. Be back in three days...gone fishen'.
Wednesday, May 17, 2006
The Braves Big Three bashers have been traveling different paths this year for Milwaukee. Joe Adcock has gone on the disabled list with only five homeruns and a batting average under .240. Henry Aaron has seen his average in or around the .280 mark most of the season. His homerun production has been hot lately with five homeruns since June 23rd to give him 22 on the year, one behind leader Ernie Banks. None of his were bigger though then the one he hit tonight to drive in the winning runs in the Braves come from behind victory against the St.Louis Cardianls. The Cards took a 7-2 lead into the 8th inning with Murry Dickson on the mound. Dickson has had a bad year going into tonights game with a dismal 1 and five mark. Tonight however, the veteran right hander had good stuff, limiting the Braves to only two runs on six hits. One was Eddie Mathews 16th homerun of the year, a solo blast in the first inning. But Murry had trouble with the strikezone in the 8th, walking the first two men he faced, Billy Bruton and Henry Aaron. Fred Hutchinson came out and made a pitching change. Because the Redbird's staff is lacking in a lefthand pitcher, Hutchinson was forced to call on the only rested reliever he had and that was Herm Wehmeier. Wehmeier came on to face Eddie Mathews with nobody out and two baserunners on in a 7-2 ballgame. Mathews took the first pitch on the outside corner for strike one and then stepped out of the batter's box. Wehmeier came right back with another fast ball that Eddie fouled down the firstbase line for strike two. After Herm tried to get Mathews to chase a bad ball, the count evened at two balls and two strikes. The next pitch Mathews was ready for and he turned his hips and threw the barrel of the bat on a inside fastball just above the knees. Joe Cunningham, the Cardinal rightfielder took three steps back and just watched as Mathew's high drive cleared the right field pavilion for a three run homerun and a 7-5 score. Wehmeier managed to get out of the 8th without anymore damage but that set the stage for the 9th inning. Carl Sawatski took a Hoyt Wilhelm knuckleball and drove it just inside the bag at first for a lead off double. Bob Taylor was summond to pinch run for the heavy footed Sawatski before Andy Pakfo was called on to pinch hit. Pafko, first pitch swinging lined a run scoring single to right center and the score now was 7-6 Cards. After Bruton rolled out slowly to second, Aaron came on for his big moment. Wilhelm threw two of his best knuckleballs that Aaron layed off of for balls as they danced out of the strikezone. With the count in Aaron's favor, Henry guessed that Wihelm would probably like to get a strike in there. He guessed right and parked the semi fast ball into the left center field bleachers and gave the Braves the 8-7 lead and eventual win. The win kept the Braves on pace with the Phils who won their game over the Pirates 5-4. A good start to July boys!
