Rookie, Red Swanson pitched a three hit, shutout at the reeling St. Louis Cardinals. The Redbirds are in 6th place, trying to catch the 5th place Pirates and not doing a very good job of it. In the real season, the Cards were a half game out of first, just behind the Milwaukee Braves at this time of the season. They are currently 12 and a half games out of first place and 4 and half lengths behind the Buccos. Swanson, a twenty year old right hander lowered his ERA to 1.80 and looks to be a very bright spot for the Corsairs in the future. In other games, the Braves got a game winning hit from newly acquired Red Schoendienst and beat the Giants 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th uprising. Teddy Kluszewski, the "steroid poster boy" of the 50's...were they around then?...hit two homers in the Redlegs win over a slumping Brooklyn Bum team. Don Newcomb surrender 14 hits in 7 plus innings taking the loss. Hal Jeffcoat got his league leading 9th win of the season, but had a rough outing allowing 5 runs in 7 innings. Final there was 8-5 Rhinelanders. The Cubs knocked off Philadelphia 3-2. Bruins were out hit 13 to 4, but still managed the win. Harry Anderson went four for 4 raising his average to .212. Red Swanson shut down the St. Louis batters on just 3 hits at Sportsman's Park
as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 1 to 0.

Swanson(2-2) escaped virtually unscathed against the St. Louis hitters. He
didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings improving his ERA from
3.27 to 1.80. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put
down the rally.

Larry Jackson(2-6) was hit with the loss. 'He came out with good stuff,'
Bobby Bragan said about Swanson. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch
on.'

Infrequently used Pete Whisenant had the big hit for the Redlegs tonight to help beat the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pete had a bases loaded triple that was hit to deep right center over Duke Snider's out stretched glove. The hit high lighted a four run out burst. Teamed with Milwaukee's loss to Pittsburgh, leaves the Redlegs only one half game behind the league leaders. Bob Friend gave up 3 runs in the first, but that was all the Braves could muster off the Corsair's Ace. Friend did need 9th inning help from reliable Elroy Face. In a two run game the Cincinnati Redlegs tallied 4 runs in the 6th inning and
got by the Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 5 to 3.

Cincinnati brought 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning
when they had 3 base hits. The key at-bat was by Pete Whisenant who thrilled
the crowd when he tripled clearing all three ducks off the pond. Brooklyn
could do no damage in the 9th.

Johnny Klippstein(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Brooks Lawrence earned his 1st save. The loss was charged
to Danny McDevitt(0-1). Although losing the contest, he whiffed 10 batters
in 6 innings.

With this win, Cincinnati has a 36-22 record. They have been 7-3 lately.
With this loss, Brooklyn has a 4-6 record of late, 32-24 overall.

Stan Musial went four for 4 in game two of the double-header sweep by the Redbirds over the Brooks by identical 5-4 scores. "The Man" hit two homeruns giving him 17 on the year and he raised his average to .384 and caught Frank Robinson for the league leadership. Both men are hitting .384 and both have hit 17 homeruns, with Musial having 44 RBI and Robby one less at 43. In the last ten games, Stan has really been the man, hitting .395 with 11 RBI and 7 boundry belts. Rip Repulski had a big game in the Phils first game win over the Milwaukee Braves. "Ripper" had four hits in five trips, hitting a homerun and driving in 5 of the Quakers 12 runs. In the night cap, Lew Burdette tossed a beauty besting Robin Roberts by a score of 2-nil. It was Burdette's third shutout of the season. Other top pitchers were Louis Arroyo pitching 8 solid innings and striking out 8 Cubs in winning the lid lifter. Also, Ray Crone getting his first start as a New York Giant pitched 7 solid innings, allowing only 3 hits, but got no decision. Giants did beat the Redlegs 5-4 in that one. In the Pirate-Cub double header, the Cubbies came back behind Bob Rush and Jim Brosnan to win the night cap. The Milwaukee Braves are leading the league with a 36-20 mark and a game and a half behind them are the Phillies and Redlegs with 35-22 records. My brother's wife Inga Rockwood passed away today April 18th, 2006. Inga was such a sweet lady and a great Yankee fan. We use to have wonderful (she used that word a lot) talks of those Yankee teams with Mantle, Maris, Yogi and Whitey. She loved baseball and the New York Yankees and followed them religiously. I can remember one story she told me about the time her and her girl friend went down to Yankee Stadium for a weekend series, before she met my brother. She loved to keep score of the games and the night before she kept a beautiful 3 hit shutout by John Candelaria. The next day at the game, she tried to get Candelaria to sign the score sheet for a momentum for her and he refused. How sad she was when he ignored her. Now my sister-in-law is rubbing shoulders with Mickey, Roger and the Babe and she is enjoying her "Field of Dreams". I love my sister-in-law very much and will miss her greatly. Posted by Picasa

Bob Buhl hurled a two hitter beating the Phillies 3 to 1. Braves hold a 1 game lead over second place Cincinnati, who got a four hitter from Brooks Lawrence. The hitting start for today was struggling slugger Frank Thomas, who was 4 for four raising his average to .223. So far this year for the Braves, Buhl has recorded two 3 hitters and now his first two hitter of the season. His record is a respectable 5 and 3 with a great ERA of 2.70. It was his first win after suffering losses on the 2nd and 6th of June and then getting a "no decision" in his last outing. For Brooks Lawrence, it is his second straight win and he has allowed only 3 runs over his last 16 and a third innings. As for Frank Thomas, he has struggled most of the year. On June 11th, he failed in four trips and was batting a miserable .190. In his last 17 at bats he has hit safely ten times and this includes one game where he was oh for three. This is the last boxscore that Danny O'Connell and Bobby Thomson will be in for the Milwaukee Braves. The trade that took place on June 15th, of 1957 saw O'Connell, Thomson and Ray Crone shipped off to New York Giants for secondbaseman Red Schoendienst. In real life Red was hitting .307 at the time of the trade and O'Connell was hitting .235 while Thomson was at .236. Crone was 3 and one but with an ERA of 4 and a half. In this replay, O'Connell was hitting .265 and Thomson was hitting .227 while Crone won 4 and lost two with and ERA of 3.06. Schoendienst is hitting just .274 so far with one game to go before joining the Braves. If the players involved were having the type of year they are experiencing in my replay I'm not so sure the Braves make that deal. But I'm looking to repeat history so it is a done deal. Also I'm going to be taking a few days off so you can see me back here around Easter. Bob Buhl allowed just 2 hits at Connie Mack Stadium as the Milwaukee Braves
beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 3 to 1.

Milwaukee scored 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning when they had 3 base
hits. Hank Aaron was the sparkplug when he blasted a solo shot (his 15th of
the season). Joe Adcock came to the plate and laced a single. Harvey Haddix
then threw a pitch that the catcher muffed. After an out was recorded,
Haddix came up and he unleashed a wild pitch. Danny O'Connell stepped into
the box and banged out a single scoring the final run of the inning. That
was all Buhl(5-3) needed. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as
neither team was able to score again.

Haddix(6-2) was the loser. He gave up just 3 runs and 7 hits in 9 innings.

Paul Smith came through with a bases loaded single off Don Elston of the Cubs, in the bottom of the 9th to give Bucs a 3-2 win. In other games the Phils pulled to within one half game of the league leading Milwaukee Braves with their win over the Braves. Don Cardwell is really pitching well for Quakers, with a 6 and 2 mark with a nifty 3 hitter and 2-1 win over Warren Spahn. "Cardy's ERA is now down to 2.69 and he is holding the opponents batting average to below 7 hits per nine innings pitched", says Phillie play-by-play man By Saam. Gino Cimoli has been in a year long slump, but tonight against the Cardinals he had four hits and a game winning, "walk off homerun" as the Bums beat Red Birds 7-6. Stan Musial hit number 14 in a losing cause. The Cincinnati Redlegs out slugged the Giants 9-5 as Post (11th), Hoak and Bailey (10th each) hit boundry belts. The Redlegs now have five batters in their everyday lineup that have hit double figures in homeruns. As a team the Rhinelanders have hit 82 so far this season. Pittsburgh Pirates won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Chicago Cubs at Forbes
Field pulling it out in their last at bats, 3 to 2.

Pittsburgh won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Bill Virdon tripled.
Gene Freese was next and he was walked intentionally. Bill Mazeroski then
was walked intentionally to load the bases. After an out was recorded, Paul
Smith came to the plate and delivered a one-base hit giving Pittsburgh the
win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Although they lost,
Chicago did out-hit Pittsburgh 12 to 6.

The win was credited to Bob Smith(1-3) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. The
loss was charged to Don Elston(2-1) in relief.

Bill Mazeroski hit for the cycle tonight as the Pittsburgh Pirates lambasted the Cincinnati Redlegs 16-0. The Bucs got 27 hits and two others on the Buccos made five hits for the night's work. Frank Thomas, who had just 6 hits for the month of June, exploded for five as did Dee Fondy. Roberto Clemente could have been the fourth member to get five, but he failed in his last at bat. Twenty seven hits is and probably will remain the top performance of the season. In other games, the Chicago Cubs hit 5 homeruns led by Cal Neeman who hit two boundry belts. Other Bruins hitting for the distance were Walt Moryn, Ernie Banks and Jim Bogler. The Cubs beat up the Polo Grounders 12-4. In other games the Brooklyn Dodgers out slugged the Milwaukee Braves 9-6 and the St. Louis Cardinals bested the Philadelphia Phillies on a Ken Boyer two-run homerun off of Sanford in the top of the 8th to beat the Quakers 4-3. Sorry that no boxscores were saved for this date....Thursday, June 13th, 1957. In the American League on this date in a real occurance, Ted Williams becomes the first player of the season to hit 3 homeruns in a game and he does it for the second time against Cleveland's Early Wynn and Bob Lemon. In a game between the Yankees and the White Sox a donny brook broke out when Art Ditmar buzzed Lary Doby's head and the ball got past Elston Howard. When Ditmar covered home plate, Doby threatened Ditmar. "I'll stick a knife in your back if you ever do that again", Doby said. He then takes a swing at Ditmar and all hell breaks loose. Finally after order is restored, some thirty minutes long, Billy Martin hears about the remark from Ditmar and then attacks Doby. Finally after order is restored and cooler heads prevail, the Yankees beat the White Sox 4-3.

Jerry Lynch has been a solid pinch hitter for the Redlegs all year. In 18 at bats as a pinch hitter he has come through with 6 base hits, but none bigger then the one he got tonight at Pittsburgh. He hadn't hit a homerun yet this year and he was facing the "forkballing" righthander from the Pirates Elroy Face. Lynch came on in the 9th inning with the bases loaded and hit a two-one pitch into the upper deck in right field that gave the Redlegs a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the 9th inning the Pirates loaded the bases up against "Eating Raul" Sanchez on three walks, the last one was intentional with men on 2nd and 3rd and the blodding Hank Foiles coming to the plate with just one out. Sanchez coaxed a hard grounder to Don Hoak at thirdbase and he started an "around the horn" double play to end the game. One Pirate, Frank Thomas, is having a horrendous season so far. He started out solid with a .304 batting average going into the month of May. In May Frank only hit .179, but did manage to hit 3 homeruns. So far in June, Frank is carrying a "weak hitting pitcher's" average of only .115. He is 6 for 52 with only two doubles as extra base hits in the month of June. Why is Bobby Bragan staying with the "Big Hurt"?... Oh, that's the wrong Frank Thomas.... "Thomas should be hitting 100 points higher and ten to 15 homeruns, says the brash one. (he only is hitting .192 with 5 homeruns) He is just struggling and swinging at too many bad pitches", claimed the Bucco Skipper. Other heroes on Wednesday were Andy Pafko driving in 4 runs in the Braves 9-0 win over Brooklyn. Also in that game the combined shutout pitching of Gene Conley and Dave Jolly. Roberto Clemente got 4 hits, three doubles for Bucs while Red Schoendienst is trying to get his season going with the Giants. Red had a three for 3 day raising his average to .276 Posted by Picasa

Red Schoendienst had 3 base hits as the New York Giants defeated the Chicago
Cubs by the score of 7 to 3 at the Polo Grounds.

New York scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning when they tallied 4 runs
on 1 hit. The key offensive moment was provided by Gail Harris who came
through for the home fans when he tripled clearing the bases. New York
finished with 8 hits while Chicago ended up with 5.

The win went to Al Worthington(4-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Turk
Lown(1-2) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 4 runs in 2 innings and
saw his ERA increase from 2.22 to 3.26.

What an evening for the Milwaukee Braves! They shellacked the Brooklyn Dodgers
pitching for 9 runs while Gene Conley(6-1), with relief help from Dave Jolly,
mystified Brooklyn.

Conley gave Milwaukee a solid outing. He surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk in 5
innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.68 to 2.38. Milwaukee out-hit Brooklyn
for the game, 11 hits to 4.

Jolly earned his 2nd save. Johnny Podres(6-5) was hit with the loss.
Milwaukee scored big getting 6 runs off him in 5 innings.

Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to 2 at Connie Mack Stadium.

Roberts(6-4) gave Philadelphia a solid outing. He didn't allow much, just 8
hits and no walks in 9 innings. St. Louis went down without a fight in the
9th.

Larry Jackson(2-5) took the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Don Hoak hit a homerun and scored 3 times as the Cincinnati Redlegs won in
dramatic fashion over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 6 to 5 at Forbes
Field.

Cincinnati had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they scored
4 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Jerry Lynch who
silenced the stadium when he depressed the partisan hometown fans with a
grand slam home run (his 1st of the season). Pittsburgh was not lacking for
run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as
they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames.

Tom Acker(3-3) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Raul Sanchez gained
credit for his 2nd save. Roy Face(2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief.
He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 3 innings.

Birdie Tebbetts was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and
win it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see
the fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win tonight!'

Carl Furillo had a big day for the Brooklyn Dodgers driving in 5 runs with a 3 for five day, raising his average to .284. The big day help the Bums beat the Braves 10-3. Other big games came from George Crowe, who hit two more homeruns, these at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field in the Redlegs 6-2 win over the Buccos. Crowe now has hit 19 homeruns and leads by four over second place Frank Robinson. Crowe also took over rbi leadership with 44. Another solid performance in that game was Gene Freese going 4 for four and uping his average to .299. Ruben Gomez hasn't been having a particularly good season, but he went the distance against the Cubs on a six hitter, beating the Cubbies 3-1. Roger Craig tossed a complete game and Carl Furillo had 3 base hits and 5 RBI
as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Milwaukee Braves 10 to 3 at Ebbets
Field.

The game started off with Brooklyn taking the lead in the first when they
tallied 2 runs on 4 hits. Brooklyn had a total of 12 hits for the game.

Craig(4-2) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Ray
Crone(4-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 9 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings.

Shortstop Daryl Spencer had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Ruben Gomez pitched a
complete game at the Polo Grounds where the New York Giants beat the Chicago
Cubs by the score of 3 to 1.

New York brought 2 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they had 4
base hits. That was all Gomez(4-6) needed. The pitchers took over after the
4th inning as neither team was able to score again.

Don Kaiser(0-5) took the loss. He gave up 9 hits and no walks in 4 innings.
The New York ballclub's record now stands at 18-35. Still in a bad slump,
with this loss, Chicago is 2-8 lately and 12-33, worst in the league on the
year.

In a tight game it was the Philadelphia Phillies 6, the St. Louis Cardinals 4
at Connie Mack Stadium.

Curt Simmons(4-5) pitched well enough to earn the win. He was reached for 10
hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 homeruns.
Philadelphia and St. Louis each finished the night with 11 hits.

Simmons got relief help from Turk Farrell who gained credit for his 6th save.
The loss was charged to Murry Dickson(1-5). He allowed 8 hits and no walks
in 6 innings.

'He gutted it out' Mayo Smith said of Simmons. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

First baseman George Crowe cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Don Gross was
able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at
Forbes Field where the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the
score of 6 to 2.

Crowe provided much of the offense. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st
inning and blasted a solo shot (his 19th of the season) in the 4th inning.
Both teams totaled 9 on the night.

The victory was credited to Gross(6-3) who went the distance, allowing 2 runs.
Bob Purkey(5-4) was the loser. He gave up 6 hits and no walks in 5 innings.
